Happy 142nd birthday to my great-grandfather Stephen Hideg! He was born on this day in Miskolc, Hungary to Janos and Lidia Hideg. He immigrated to the United States in 1902 at age 17 and became a citizen in 1908. He married a fellow Hungarian immigrant, my great-grandmother Maria Therese Kocsis in 1911 and they would go on to have 5 daughters together in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

During his life Stephen worked as an iron molder and was the President of his factory’s workers committee.

Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1896, my Great-Grand Uncle Sol bravely built a new life in America, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1925. He married Rose Artstein and had two children, Albert and Mildred. He passed away in 1968, at age 72 but his memory lives on. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Uncle Sol!

Happy 73rd wedding anniversary to my grandparents, Marion Hideg and Charles Henry Breene Ill. They married on this day in 1952 in Bridgeport, Connecticut when my Nana was 26 and my grandfather was 37.

Celebrating the 114th wedding anniversary of my great-grandparents, Charles Breene Jr. and Evelyn Mather! They married in Bridgeport on June 19th, 1911, when Charles was 24 years old and Evelyn was 20.

Happy 93rd wedding anniversary to my great grandparents, Joseph Greenland and Mollie Kaplan! They tied the knot on June 12th, 1932, in Brooklyn and spent 40 incredible years together!

Happy 110th birthday to my grandfather Charles Henry Breene! Born on May 29th 1915 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Charles Henry Breene and Evelyn Mather and was one of 4 children. He married my Nana and had two kids, my mom and uncle. He lived his entire life in Bridgeport and worked as a police officer.

Remembering István (Stephen) Hideg on His 141st Birthday

Today, I’m honoring the life and legacy of my great-grandfather, István Hideg—later known as Stephen Hideg in the U.S. Born in Miskolc, Hungary, in 1884, he was the middle child of Janos Hideg and Lidia Major, with two brothers, László and Daniel.

At just 17, Stephen bravely left his homeland and immigrated to the U.S. in 1901, settling in Connecticut, where he worked as a moulder. In 1911, he married my great-grandmother, Maria Therese Kocsis, and together they raised five daughters.

In 1917, he officially became a U.S. citizen and soon after enlisted in the Army as the U.S. entered World War I. After his service, he lived the rest of his life in Bridgeport until his passing in 1953.

Happy 99th birthday to my Nana Marion Hideg! She was born on this day in 1926 to Stephen Hideg and Maria Therese Kocsis and was the youngest of 5 girls. She married my grandpa Charlie in 1952 and raised my mom and uncle in the same house in Bridgeport, Connecticut that she grew up in. I will always cherish the memories I have of her and wish I could celebrate with her today. Miss you Nana!

Happy 87th birthday to my grandmother Helene (Deutsch) Greenland! She was born in the Bronx to Milton Deutsch and Libby Klionsky and is the younger sister to her brother Stephen. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a degree in early childhood education and taught readiness and kindergarten after moving to New Hampshire with my grandfather. She is the mother to three children, the grandmother to five, and the great-grandmother to two. She will always be our favorite kid from the Bronx!
