An hour of construction labor costs 25% more than it did in 2021.

$33.27 an hour in September 2021. $41.69 this September. Up 4.2% in the last 12 months alone. That's the BLS average across construction, all employees.

If your flat rate book was last touched in 2022, it's worth a look this week.

When did you last update your price book?

Big news: Notifi is partnering with Wisetack. 🎉

Wisetack is the consumer financing platform built for home services. Starting now, Notifi shops can put pay-over-time options right on the estimate, so homeowners can say yes to the big job while the tech is still in the kitchen.

One record from estimate to job to invoice. Nothing retyped.

Welcome to the Notifi family, Wisetack.

Hot take: per-seat pricing is a tax on hiring.

You hire tech number 12 and your software bill goes up before he's run a single call. Add a CSR for summer, pay again. Let a helper see his schedule, pay again.

So shops stop adding people to the software. The helper texts the lead tech for his schedule. The office shares a login. And now nobody knows who did what.

That's why Notifi is flat. Unlimited seats. Hire who you need.

One free trip back costs more than you think.

We worked it on a typical shop:
2 hours of tech time: $100
2 hours of truck: $50
The paying call you didn't run in that slot: $450

About $600. Three a week is $93,600 a year.

Your numbers will be different. Swipe through and plug yours in.

How many callbacks did you have last week? Honest answer.

Everybody thinks shops leave ServiceTitan over price. That's not what I hear on the calls.

I opened one by saying cost is everyone's pain point with ServiceTitan. The owner stopped me. "It's not that it costs too much. That's not true for us. It's unintuitive."

That comes up more than price does. The software isn't too expensive. It's too heavy. Somebody has to run it, and that somebody is buried.

Price is the reason people give. Complexity is the reason they actually move.

Tell me I'm wrong. What made you start looking?

The box costs 45% more than it did in 2021.

Did your prices move 45%?

That is the BLS producer price index for AC and heating equipment. Up 45% in five years. Up 4.4% in the last twelve months. It moved 1.2% between June and July alone.

Most shops repriced once in that whole stretch. Then the job that made money in 2023 comes back flat and nobody can say why.

A shared lead is an auction you entered last.

Saw an owner post this today. His customer asked for one install quote and got eleven callbacks. By the time she picked up she was done with all eleven. Good shops punished for what the bad ones did.

You are not buying a customer. You are buying a spot in line, and everyone else in that line is dialing the same number.

If you still buy them, what is your real close rate? Genuinely asking.

End of August.

Right now somebody is in a 140 degree attic on a Monday afternoon because a family has a newborn and no AC.

In three weeks it flips. Same guy, same truck, under a house chasing a pilot light.

Nobody outside the trade knows the calendar runs like that.

What is the worst attic you have been in this summer?

We counted the controls on our own booking screen. 45.

Put it next to ServiceTitan's and the problem was obvious. Theirs is a booking form. Ours had turned into a job editor, asking for line items and invoice terms on a job that did not exist yet.

So we rebuilt it. 45 controls down to 14. Ten screens of scroll down to one. The rest moved to the job record, where it belongs.

Nobody asked us for this. A dispatcher would have just kept scrolling.

How many screens does it take to book one job in what you run now?

More people work in the trades right now than at any point on record. 5,271,200 in July.

And hiring has basically flatlined.

July to July, workers added:
2022 to 2023: +138,000
2023 to 2024: +115,000
2024 to 2025: +15,000
2025 to 2026: +47,000

Two years ago the industry was adding six figures of workers a year. Now it adds a fraction of that.

If your plan to grow is to hire, you are fishing in a pond that stopped filling up. The shops I talk to are not short on leads. They are short on people to run them.

So the growth has to come out of the trucks you already have. More jobs per tech per day. Fewer holes in the dispatch board. Fewer callbacks that burn a second visit.

That is an office problem, not a hiring problem.
