Scientists Develop Transparent Conductors

Stanford University scientists have teamed up with their counterparts at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory connected with the Department of Energy to build electrical conductors that are transparent and flexible. These high performing conductors can be used in solar cells, display units and other gadgets.

Unusual production technique

The fabrication method as reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences appears to be unique. The researchers have created the conductor by applying polymers over a transparent surface using a blade. The application method is quite similar to spreading butter on a slice of toast with a knife. The procedure has been quite successful in the production of patterned electrodes for use in solar cells and touch sensors. The researchers hope to implement the method for the production of transparent conductors in bulk.

Tweaking the conductivity

Zhenan Bao, a professor at the university explains how the conductivity of the product can be varied by adjusting the coating level - fine-tuning the application mechanism allows for exceptional levels of conductivity. The material structure can be altered at the molecular level by adjusting the application of the polymer layer.

Making for flexible electronics

Transparent conductors present great advantages in solar cells, light displays and other devices where it is necessary to pass light through different layers. The conductor being used currently in these items is indium tin oxide. Although this is a satisfactory conductor, it is expensive and incompatible with flexible electronics like displays built for computers and other new generation devices.

Stefan Mannsfeld, associated with SLAC points out the new conductors being transparent, cheap and easily constructed will meet the demand for flexible electronics.

New Miniature Size MOS Capacitors Deliver High Power

Vishay has announced the launch of two new miniature size bar MOS capacitors made of thin film that can used for high power applications. Vishay has designed these capacitors with the primary purpose of use in high power hybrid assemblies, GaN and SiC applications.

The capacitors are named as Vishay Dale Resistors Electro-films BRCP. They have the capability to handle high power and voltages for operation up to 100V in miniature size form in 2 compact cases. Among them, the case A measures 35 mil x 120 mil and the case B measures 35 mil x 240 mil. This compactness facilitates designs of smaller products, but at the same time maintaining a high level of performance.

The MOS construction is robust and has a high working voltage, over a capacitance ranging from 100 pF to 5 pF. The new product launched by Vishay is optimized for LRC, RC, and LC filters, DC blocking and RF choking along with impedance matching. For applications with this optimization, the BRCP capacitors accommodate wire bonds of multiple natures. At the lowest values, the case A can have seven wire bonds, whereas the case B can accommodate 15 wire bonds. The MOS capacitor offers low TCC down to +/- 50 ppm/°C, with absolute tolerance levels going down to as low as +/-5%.

Vishay has designed these capacitors for excellent load-life stability. The capacitors operate over a very wide operating temperature range of +150 to -55°C. The capacitors also feature high Q and low D. The capacitance values for case A range from 5 to 50 and for case B, the range is from 10 to 100. Their short time overload capacity at two times the rated voltage at 250C and 5 seconds is +/-0.25%. Their operating voltage is 100V at the maximum level. The chip substrate material is silicon with silicon dioxide as the dielectric.

Low Profile Connectors With Crimp Style

A Waukegan based company, JST Corporation, in the State of Illinois, has recently introduced a series of crimp style connectors with an extremely low profile of 3.00 mm. This is known as the new LBT A Type Series crimp style connectors. JST has designed these connectors for saving space when using wire-to-board connections.

These could be wires incorporating both signal and power from circuits and other power connections sequencing such as from lithium battery applications. These are SMT connectors, which have a profile of only 3.00 mm or 0.118” height in assembled condition.

Apart from their compact size, the new LBT A Type Series crimp style connectors also incorporate polarization and their contact performance is stable even when there are unexpected external forces of high vibration and distortion. The SMT type headers also come with configuration for side entry. JST has designed the unique header contacts with a feature known as “heat sink/ heat dissipation.” This feature facilitates radiation of the heat from the power contact so that it allows a capability for higher current transmission.
When used with a 28 AWG wire, the rating at 50V AC/DC is 0.5A AC/DC. When substituted with a 20 AWG wire, the rating increases to 7A AC/DC. JST offers circuit sizes of 9, 7, 5 and 3 for PCB side entry headers.

Operating temperatures for the new LBT A Type Series crimp style connectors range from -25 to +850C and this includes the temperatures generated when an electrical current is applied. The mounted contacts on the PCB are made from materials such as tin plated copper alloy. The material used for the contacts for signal power is phosphor bronze. The connectors have a molded format using 94V-0 material complying with the RoHS standards. The housings feature a secure locking system along with polarization. JST offers these SMT headers on embossed tape meant for equipment using automatic insertion.
