"We use OneDrive, so we're backed up."

That one comes up in almost every conversation, and it is the most expensive misunderstanding on the list. Cloud storage syncs your files, which means it faithfully copies your ransomware encryption and your accidental deletions right along with everything else. A real backup is a separate copy, somewhere your main systems cannot reach.

Our newest article covers the three protections that actually do the work for a small business, along with the eight myths that keep owners from putting them in place: https://bit.ly/4h90yBj

Long beats complicated. A passphrase made of several unrelated words is easier to remember and harder to crack than a short string of symbols.

🔸Use a different password for every account, so one breach does not open every door.
🔸Let a business password manager create and store them for you.
🔸Change a password right away if a service reports a breach.

How many of these can you answer with a confident yes?

Is multifactor authentication on every business email account, including the shared inboxes? Is endpoint protection running on phones, not just computers? Has anyone actually restored from your backups in the last 90 days?

We put twelve of these into a one-page checklist. Print it, work through it, and take whatever you cannot confirm to your IT provider. No form, no email required.

Most phishing emails give themselves away if you slow down for a few seconds.

🔸Check the sender’s actual email address, not just the display name.
🔸Hover over links to see where they really go before clicking.
🔸Be wary of urgency, like “act now” or “your account will be closed.”
🔸Verify unexpected payment or password requests by calling the sender on a number you already have.

When in doubt, do not click. Report it to your IT provider instead.

A password alone is not enough protection for your business accounts. Multi-factor authentication adds a second check, like a code or an approval on your phone, so a stolen password is not enough to get in.

Start with email, banking, and your cloud storage. If an app offers MFA, turn it on today. Use an authenticator app over text messages when you have the choice.

Small businesses rarely get hacked by a genius. They get hacked through five ordinary gaps that nobody closed.

A convincing email. A reused password. A patch that never got applied. A former employee whose access is still active. A team that was never told what to watch for.

Our new one-page checklist turns those five into twelve things you can verify this week, with a column for "not sure," because that answer is just as useful as a no.

Most small businesses do not get hacked by a genius. They get hacked by an automated script that found an unlocked door.

Five ordinary gaps account for the large majority of attacks: a convincing email, a reused password, a patch nobody applied, an old employee whose access was never removed, and a team that was never told what to watch for. None of them require a big budget to close.

Our newest article walks through all five, with current 2026 figures and the five steps we would start with: https://bit.ly/4xDTv9C

If your systems went down tomorrow, how long could your team keep working?

That is a business question, not an IT question. When a breach or ransomware attack hits, it does not stay in the server room. It shows up as billable hours you cannot recover, deadlines you cannot meet, and clients asking whether their information is safe with you. Louisiana law also gives you no more than 60 days to notify affected residents.

Our newest article breaks down the five places cybersecurity risk actually lands on a small business, with current 2026 figures and five questions worth asking your IT partner this quarter: https://bit.ly/4yoWl2x

Here is an uncomfortable question for any business owner: what did your IT provider recommend in the last year that you decided not to pay for?

Most owners can't answer it. That's the problem, because if something goes wrong later, that decision gets reviewed by people who are not on your side, like insurers, regulators, and sometimes attorneys.

Our new one-page checklist has twelve questions like that one. Who owns cybersecurity risk at your company, what a week offline would actually cost you, what your insurance assumes you already have in place, and how long you have to notify people after a breach in Louisiana. None of them require technical knowledge to answer.

Quick tip: Running software or hardware past its end-of-life date can leave your business exposed to security risks with no way to patch them. Waiting until something breaks is rarely the safest option. Not sure what in your environment is nearing end of life? Contact Courant and let's find out.
