‼️Introducing this week’s forum guest‼️
Mark Grote Lecture Series Presents Kyle Bravo, this Wednesday, October 21, in Monroe 610. From New Orleans to New Yorker, Kyle Bravo is a cartoonist and art educator. His cartoons have appeared in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Antigravity, and more. He has self published numerous collections of his own cartoons and comics while still finding time to play with his kids and take occasional naps. He co-founded the Bywater artist-run gallery, The Front, and the letterpress and screenprinting studio, Hot Iron Press, but recently retired from being a hipster to become just a regular old man. He loves pizza, matcha lattes, and everything that is funny.

Recently, students in Interactive 1 visited Zeus’s Rescues, a local pet shelter, to meet with and interview the owner, Michelle Cheramie. They have been tasked with redesigning Zeus’ website for clearer navigation and easy upkeep. The Interactive Design 1 Class is centered around not only learning website design, but also real-world application. This allows our students to take their skills beyond the classroom and learn about the professional design world. They are very excited to work alongside this small business owner!

First-year design students are required to take a Drawing class to strengthen their ability to sketch ideas quickly and coherently. Recently, they completed a still life exercise as part of the course. Our analog and digital program does not require incoming students to have prior drawing experience. However, we work hard to ensure that they leave the program with the ability to use sketching as an integral part of their design process.

In their Human Centered Design class, Kylie Benesh-Llop, John Zwiers, and U’nique Allen created a projection-mapping piece based on a scene from You on the Moors Now, the Theatre Department’s fall production. Their scene is the moment right after the women refuse their marriage proposals and escape onto the moors. The prompt was “Exposed”: the fear and the freedom of that moment, at the same time.

❗️Introducing this week’s Guest❗️
Please join us this Monday, October 5th, from 4:55-6:10pm in Roussel Hall as we welcome Simpson’s producer, Bonnie Pietila! Each semester, we collaborate with other departments in the College of Music and Media to host a forum that encourages collaboration between majors by highlighting the ways different concentrations work together. This Super Forum, we are excited to hear from Bonnie about how Filmmaking, Design, and Music come together to create a show that we all know and love.

📽️Motion Monday📽️
In continuation with last Motion Monday, we are highlighting the Onomatopoeia Project. This time, we’re taking a look at the animations that the students drew frame by frame. Aligning with The Loyola Design Department’s dedication to analog making, students were tasked with creating animations the old-fashioned way: with pencil, paper, tracings, colored pencils, water colors, and copy machines.

Featured are animations created by:

This past year, a main goal for the Loyola Design Department was outreach to prospective students. Recent graduate, Shae Schouest (‘26) took this very seriously when considering her Senior Capstone project. Combining her design and filmmaking skills, Shae created a promotional video that uses personal narrative to give prospective students a closer look into the Loyola Design Department. Her video opens the door to our department, encouraging students to put a name to their creative curiosity. As Shae calls it, “Design at Loyola University New Orleans.”

📽️Motion Monday📽️
For the next two Motion Mondays, we are highlighting the Onomatopoeia Project. Students in Motion 1 have four weeks to generate two animations that play out an Onomatopoeia word. This week’s focus is their stop-motion animations. Aligning with The Loyola Design Department’s dedication to analog making, students create animations the old-fashioned way: with cut out magazines, cut out letters, a matchbox car, pipe-cleaners, and a hedgehog.

Ella Balhoff ‘24 returned to Loyola Design to share her professional journey with students in the Senior Design Practicum class. As a Loyola senior, Ella’s capstone project took an unexpected turn when she created a prototype for a rescue app designed for Louisiana residents. That experience helped launch her career in UX, leading to a role creating user-focused projects for a healthcare products company in Lafayette. We’re grateful to Ella for sharing her experience, offering thoughtful feedback, and showing our students how a classroom project can become the starting point for a career. We’re also looking forward to the next chapter in Ella’s design journey.

Students in Drawing 1 have been working on Storyboard Journal exercises for homework. This week’s theme was Rube Goldberg machines, allowing students to create their own sequences and ideas around a fun, playful concept. Take a look at what they came up with.

Storyboards are displayed outside of Monroe 402.
