Archaeologists don’t usually get excited about ancient treasures…
but in 1991, a researcher in York held up a 1,200-year-old Viking artifact and said:
“This is as irreplaceable as the Crown Jewels.” 😅💎
What was he holding?
Not a sword.
Not a crown.
Not gold.
A fossilized Viking p**p — one of the largest and best-preserved ever discovered.
This coprolite measured an incredible 20 cm long and 5 cm wide, preserved so perfectly that scientists could study everything the Viking had eaten over a thousand years ago.
And what did they find?
🍖 A diet loaded with meat and bread
🥚 Hundreds of parasitic eggs from whipworms and maw worms — proof of a heavy intestinal infection
🥖 Almost no fruits or vegetables, even though people in 9th-century Jorvik did have access to them
The stool fossilized through mineralization, which protected its shape and texture far better than simple drying. That’s why researchers can still examine it today as if it were a tiny time capsule from the Viking Age.
To palaeoscatologist Andrew Jones, this wasn’t just ancient waste — it was a rare scientific window into Viking health, diet, and daily life.
Scientists joke about it, but it truly is one of the most informative specimens of its kind ever found.
Proof that sometimes, history’s most unexpected discoveries turn out to be the most revealing. 💡⚔️
