Net and Gross Gallon Readings from an ATG

There is a lot of misunderstanding about the difference between Net and Gross Gallons that the ATG calculates and displays.

Gross gallons are a unit of volume which is independent of the fuel's temperature. These are the gallons shown on a dispenser.
Net Gallons are gross gallons corrected for temperature. They are a measure of mass and energy. The normal temperature in the USA is considered to be 60 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature Net Gallons equals Gross Gallons.

The ATG calculates both Net and Gross gallons by measuring the fuel temperature if configured to do so. As part of the service, we can remotely configure your ATG to also show Net Gallons which is also called TC Volume.
In southern climates fuel is often sold in Net Gallons because of the higher temperatures, especially in summer.

Understanding Net versus Gross gallons is important when understanding deliveries. For instance, a tanker truck is filled early morning at a terminal. The truck arrives at the station after being in strong sunshine and heat for 3 to 4 hours. The hot fuel is unloaded into an underground storage tank which cools the fuel.

The ATG calculated Gross delivery will not match the BOL due to the increase in temperature.

COVID-19 is changing the way we think and work. Our way of life has changed and many of the changes will be with us after the pandemic is over.
Here at Kachoolie we are seeing a 100% increase in sales compared to 2019 with no changes to how we run the business. The increase is due to the effects of the pandemic.
The pandemic has cut the staffing at C-Stores, especially at dealer stores, our main market.
Fuel suppliers who call the stores for the latest inventory reading are finding that it is more difficult to get the latest inventory by phone than prior to the pandemic because the store clerk is busy and also cannot leave the cash register to read the tank gauge.
Due to the varying demand for fuel as a result of lockdowns and other restrictions which often change, frequent inventory readings have become important to plan deliveries.

Another effect is the difficulty of installing and maintaining remote access equipment at the store. The typical installation and frequent maintenance of a TCP/IP card in a tank gauge (the alternative to Kachoolie) requires a technician who has networking and tank gauge experience. These technicians, are typically older and are more vulnerable to the dangers of COVID-19. Many are avoiding doing service calls because of fears of endangering their lives. The stores also prefer to minimise technician visits, especially as travelling technicians may be spreading the virus.

Kachoolie has a "Plug and Play" install process that can be done by anyone already at the store. In addition any communication issues are diagnosed remotely and fixed remotely or by directing the person at the store.

Conclusion

COVID-19 effects has increased the need for remote access to tank gauges and Kachoolie provides a solution without endangering C-Store staff or service technicians.

After a power failure, router problem or someone has disconnected cables, Kachoolie may not communicate. This video describes the LED's visibile under the tank gauge and how they can be used to diagnose problems. It also shows how to power cycle the router and Kachoolie which solves 99% of communications problems.
