E-waste is the fastest-GROWING waste stream in.
The.
WORLD!
Faster than plastic, paper, or even general household trash!
That’s exactly why we take e-waste seriously.
We recently had a trailer load of old tech from a college campus brought to us. Everything from old computers and servers, to antennas, network equipment, drives, and more.
It's always good to see businesses and schools take recycling their tech seriously!
But it's not just schools and businesses that produce ewaste, it's us in our personal life, too.
How do you improve e-waste in your home?

What’s the MOST frustrating thing your computer does?

• Takes forever to start?
• Random pop-ups?
• Won’t connect to Wi-Fi?
• Something else?

Tell us about YOUR computer frustrations— we might make a 'tips/quick fixes' post for your problem in the future (like we did yesterday where we revealed 7 tricks on how you can speed up a slow computer). We want to help our community even before they step in the store ;)

For me (Kay), my biggest computer pet peeve is when my art or writing programs crash—thankfully, I have built a very strong habit of saving my documents and files OFTEN so I rarely loose much work.

Is your device running slow? Try these quick fixes!

1) Restart it (not just sleep mode or shutting it down, but a restart!)

2) Close any programs you’re not using.

3) Check for new updates or if updates are pending.

4) Close browser tabs that you don't need.

5) Check your storage. If your drive is getting full, it's time to free up some space.

6) Check and EMPTY your trash/recycling bin on your computer

7) Close and disable “startup apps” that you don't need.--These are apps that open or run in the background when you first turn on your computer. Common examples are: Discord, Spotify, Office Teams, and game launchers. I'll explain in DETAIL how to do this on a Windows computer in the comment section below.

If you followed these tips and it’s still slow, we’re happy to take a look and help you get it fixed!

Stop by anytime or message us at Computer Zone with questions!
And please feel free to ask questions in the comments if you need any help performing the tips above.

Computer MYTH: If my computer is slow, I need a new one.

The reality is that, most of the time, a cleanup or upgrade can make your computer feel like new!

We help people save money and reduce ewaste by fixing what they already have — and we’ll always tell you honestly if something isn’t worth repairing.

Also, we will be posting a few quick and simple tricks later today on how YOU can take steps to speed up your computer at home, so be sure to watch for that!

Computer MYTH: shutting down my computer is the same as restarting it.

This is NOT true! Shutting down your computer and then powering it back on is not the same as restarting your computer.

When you shut down a modern computer, it doesn't completely shut down. Typically a shut down for a modern computer is like taking a photo of what was on a white board, erasing it, and then restored whatever was on it before by looking at the photo and putting it back onto the white board. This is why shutting down and powering back on may not fix your problem—you've recreated it!

A restart, however, tells your operating system to shut down ALL running programs and services, reset system memory (RAM), reinitialize drivers and hardware, and immediately boot back up fresh and clean. It's like erasing the whiteboard without a photo to restore it back to what it was before—it's completely clean.

So, the next time you have an issue with your computer, try restarting it and see if it helps. If it doesn't, come and see us at Computer Zone, we'll get you up and running again!

We've been having a lot of storms lately and we want to send out a friendly tip to our community on how you can protect your devices!

Tip #1) Make sure to pre-charge your devices before the storm hits. You don't want your laptop or cell phones charging or plugged in during the storm. If lightning hits it can fry your device and it's very expensive (and sometimes impossible) to fix.

Tip #2) You ESPECIALLY should NOT be holding a cellphone that is charging during a storm! We've seen a few cases in the news recently where people have been electrocuted this way, and you are far more valuable than your device! So, please, be careful.

Tip #3) If you have a desktop it would be wise to unplug it if you're not using it or to have it plugged into a surge protector. However, be aware that surge protectors do wear out over time!

And, as always, if you ever have any issues or questions about your device, feel free to stop in to Computer Zone or give us a call so we can help you!

How else do ya'll get ready and safe for the stormy weather?
