The 2027 Big Calendar is off the presses and now available in the gift shop (and online)! The ten designer-printers who work in the shop every day divided up the year and followed their own muses to celebrate each month and the shop’s tools of wood and metal type and hand carved printing blocks. Many freshly-carved printing blocks were created for this calendar and we hope you enjoy turning to each month as much as the staff enjoyed exploring the process of letterpress printing to complete the year!

Shop life: this time of year, most of our type cases are pretty pilfered, like boxes of chocolate the day after Christmas. These two fonts, or sets of type, are what we call Gothic Eight-Line Number One (left) and Gothic Ten-Line Number One (right) are surprisingly intact in the case instead of in use in poster layouts that are waiting to be printed. Don’t they look like tasty pieces of candy waiting to be picked? Over the decades, the type builds patina from the inks used to print them, and these are particularly colorful!

Shop life: one year ago, while working on the big 2026 calendar, we used sparkles to make April’s page pop. Apparently, they’ve been hitching a ride on this wood type ever since.

West Coast activity alert! Fellow inky hearts at The International Printing Museum in Carson, California, are hosting the 18th Annual Los Angeles Printers Fair on October 17–18, and we’ll be there to share the new things we’ve been making this year!

There will be printing and book arts activities, demonstrations, and nearly 100 artists, makers, and suppliers showing (and selling) their handmade work—plus, tools for handmaking your own work. We’d love to see you or meet you!

What’s on your fall fun itinerary? Many of us here in the shop are fond of a classic road trip, but as the weather cools, it can be a wonderful thing to be a visitor in your own neck of the woods, too, relaxing at home in between a bunch of mini adventures.

Finally! A tote large enough to hold every book on your TBR list all at once, PLUS any other treasures you get from your local library or favorite bookshop.

The images and graphic elements that dance with the typography in this tote’s design include sketches drawn by hand over a century ago and sketches added earlier this year. These elements became printable when we cut them into wood or linoleum printing blocks by hand.
