So often I hear “family-owned” and I think, “What does that really mean?”
I won’t mention names, but there’s a pretty huge national retail chain that is family-owned. I’d bet my life that you’ve been inside one of their big blue stores at least once. But have you ever bumped into one of the family-owners inside? If you have an issue with a product, how likely is the owner to call you up to work it out?
There’s nothing wrong with being that huge. Props to them for all their success. But when I do business with a family-owned company, it’s because I like working with the family.

Things change. It’s inevitable. Without change, there isn’t progress. It has been quite a while since we've posted on here. That’s because there’s been lots of changes going on here at 2 way radio express. My name is Matt Lawfer. I’ve taken over many responsibilities for my father as he focuses on his retirement.

Most of the changes are happening behind the scenes and won’t be noticed by anybody outside the office.

Hi Friends,

Digital radios have only been around a few years. Most of the radios in use today are still analog radios.

Analog radios capture the physical aspects of sound and transmits this sound to other radios.

Digital radios convert the physical aspects of sound into a stream of data.

When digital radios were first introduced they were substantially more expensive....like 3 or 4 times mores expensive than analog radios. An analog radio that costs $200 would cost as much as $800 in digital format.

For most radio users, digital only offers a modest increase in range however the sound quality is crystal clear. And the sound quality stays crystal clear even when distance or interference causes a regular analog radio to lose its signal or become filled with static.

I never felt the additional cost was worth the modest increase in distance or the improved sound quality. After all we are talking about Louie in the shop talking to Mike in shipping not Simon and Garfunkel singing Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

Hi Friends,

I was raised a Catholic. During Lent Catholics deny themselves some pleasure as a demonstration of sacrifice and devotion to our faith. Since I remarried, after 20 years of marriage to my first wife whom I do not speak to anymore, I am not officially a Catholic. Catholics are not allowed to remarry. Rules are rules.

However, I still practice Lent. I truly enjoy a cocktail or beer or wine most every day. But during Lent I give up alcohol of any type. During Lent it is no booze for me. I have been doing this most of my adult life.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. Every year on Ash Wednesday I visualize myself 10 pounds lighter by the end of Lent. I do this every year but every year I weight the same on Easter Sunday as I did on Ash Wednesday.

I explained this phenomenon to my nephew Andy. Andy, who knows a thing or two about alcohol told me, “Uncle Manzie, the reason you don’t loose any weight is because you are substituting something else for the alcohol.” Andy challenged me with “I bet you are eating sweets during Lent that you don’t normally eat. Sweets are a common substitute for alcohol.”

Under my breathe I angrily muttered, “I suppose ice cream counts as sweets?”

That’s the problem! I like ice cream as much as I like a daily cocktail or two.

One of my earliest memories is eating vanilla ice cream out of a paper cup with a flat wooden spoon. This took place before I ever ate popsicles, drumsticks, dreamsicles or ice cream sandwiches. Ice cream in a paper cup was safe. There was no concern or danger of the ice cream melting too fast. Even if it melted it was still safely contained in the cup. Conversely, it takes a more mature and skilled person to consume ice cream in a cone or on a stick. Rapidity is required to avoid peril.

Today my superior dexterity and speed allows for the consumption of ice cream served in cones, cups, sandwiches and bars. And that is why I weight the same on Ash Wednesday as I do on Easter Sunday.

Hi Friends,

Grayson is the youngest of our four sons. Grayson turns 33 years old this week. He use to work here at 2 Way Radio Express but recently enlisted in the US Navy. He was craving more adventure and travel in his life. He is currently living in Pensacola, Florida and is studying to be an Air Traffic Controller. We could not be more proud of him.

My Joy Ann (aka The Princess) and I going to drive to Pensacola to visit with Grayson this week. We want to see him to celebrate his birthday and also be with him on Easter.

The highly organized Joy Ann has put out a suitcase for me. She has instructed me to put my favorite clothes in the suitcase. I’ll be honest with you...I do not have favorite underwear or socks. My underwear is all pretty much the same. I named my bicycle Trigger. I refer to one of my guitars as Pearl. My car’s name is Betty. Naming these inanimate objects is a way of demonstrating preference and familiarity. I do not have any way of ciphering one pair of underwear from another. I may just refer to the clothes I choose to bring on the trip as my spring collection.

Of course I will be bringing Grayson a batch of home made cookies. I have been a cook since I was a little kid. I do all the cooking at home. Somebody has to prepare The Princess’ lunch. I didn’t venture into baking until later in life. Cooking and baking are two different things.

I began baking oatmeal cookies in 2010. I use only the finest ingredients. I bring the eggs and butter up to room temperature before I blend everything together. I use dark chocolate M&M instead of raisins. I carefully chop the walnuts into precise pieces. There are a lot of tricks to baking. My oatmeal cookies are declared to be World Class by everyone that tries them. Grayson will be getting a double batch to share with his colleagues. Thanks for your service.

Hi Friends,

Like most everyone else in America I think I make the best chili. My recipe has two secret ingredients. The first secret is “Wick Fowler’s 2 Alarm Chili.”

When I lived in Kentucky, Wick Fowler’s sister lived in our neighborhood. There was a fancy horse farm across the highway from where we lived. The Queen of England bought horses from that farm. John Y Brown was governor of Kentucky then and he would loan his helicopter to the Queen when she visited. Wick Fowler’s sister used to delight in telling her friends that the Queen came by today when ever the Governor’s helicopter flew over.

In 1967, in the town of Terlingua, Texas, the first world chili cook off was held. It was here that Wick Fowler won and established the standard for world class, authentic Texas-style chili.

Wick Fowler’s 2 Alarm Chili is available at most grocery stores and contains 7 individual packets of spices. These spices plus fresh ground beef, chopped onions and canned tomatoes produce a powerful mixture. It is powerful but not complete until I add the 2nd secret ingredient: a can of premium beer. I like Yuengling Light so I dump most of a can of it into the mix. I usually save one swallow. Whether it is 8 AM or 5 PM I save that swallow for just a taste. That taste of beer (that I refer to as Chili Beer) is the best beer I have ever tasted. It is good to recognize and savor the things that make you happy.

I have a Fresh Market within walking distance from home. Fresh Market is an upscale fresh meat and produce market. A lot of the fruits and vegetables are organic and the beef is grass fed only. I suspect the eggs come from individually housed and union organized chickens.

I was at the check out counter yesterday. Among my other items were 6 lemons. The cashier examined each of the lemons and told me, “I use to buy my lemons at Walmart or wherever. I bought some lemons here the other day and I can’t believe the difference. You’d think all lemons are about the same. The lemons from here are juicier, more flavorful and have less seeds. And the difference in price is really small.”

It is good to recognize and savor the things that make you happy. Everyone has a lemon story.

Hi Friends,

I have never owned a gun. I never had much interest in guns. I am not a hunter and I never wanted the responsibility of gun ownership. When I was in the Air Force there was some minimal training in the use of fi****ms but during my 4 years of military service my job did not require me to carry a weapon.

Everyone is not suited to gun ownership. The civic responsibility of gun ownership includes licensing, maintaining a level of proficiency and a commitment to safe use and storage.

If the purpose of gun ownership is self defense you have to also be willing to accept the consequences of using a lethal weapon.

None of this is to say I am against gun ownership. I am fully in favor of gun ownership. I believe in our Second Amendment Rights. I believe our country would be a safer place if every sane adult carried a weapon. However gun ownership is not for me.

Today in the USA someone is physically attacked or robbed every 6 seconds. Personal protection is becoming a necessity of life.

My son Jay has three beautiful and talented daughters. These girls are still in school but they have active lives and after school jobs. It is not unusual for them to be out at night and alone. Jay bought and trained his daughters in the use of stun guns.
