It happens to the best of us. You're working away on your computer, and suddenly, water starts spilling onto your keyboard! Whether it's a spilled cup of coffee or a rogue wave from your water bottle, water and computers don't mix. So what do you do if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation?
First of all, don't panic! While it's not ideal, a little water on your computer is not going to kill it. Just turn it off immediately, and unplug any cables or peripherals that are connected to it. Then, tip your computer upside down so that the water can drain out.
Once your computer is turned off and upside down, it's time to start drying it off. You can use a can of compressed air to blow the water out of any nooks and crannies, and then use a cloth to wipe down the outside.
Once you've dried off your computer as best as you can, wait 24-48 hours for anything else to dry - the longer you can wait the better!
Ok, now it's time to turn it back on and see if it's still working. If it is, great! You can finish up whatever you were working on before the water incident.
If it's not working, that's not great... BUT, there are a few things you can try to salvage your computer.
If your computer won't turn on at all, the first thing to check is the power supply. If it's wet, you'll need to replace it. If your computer turns on but doesn't boot up, you may be able to fix the issue by taking out the battery and starting it up without it.
If your computer is working but the screen is fuzzy, try turning down the resolution. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the screen.
Water and computers don't mix, but if you find yourself with a wet computer, don't panic! There are a few things you can do to try to salvage it. If nothing else works, give us a call and we'll see if we can repair or perhaps get you a quote for a new one.
