Monthly Bill Credit Winners Announced Below:

Did you know: From the early 1960s through 1980, Mulberry Cooperative Telephone Company experienced one of the biggest transformations in its history — evolving from a small rural operator-based phone system into a modern telecommunications network serving our growing communities.

With the introduction of dial service, customers could finally:
☎️ Dial local numbers directly
⚡ Enjoy faster, more reliable connections
🔒 Experience more privacy on calls

This modernization mirrored a nationwide movement as rural telephone cooperatives worked to keep pace with larger urban phone systems.

Another major milestone during this era was the transition to underground telephone lines. Beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the 1960s and 70s, Mulberry undertook the enormous task of burying miles of cable underground — a bold investment for a small rural cooperative.

At the time, many rural systems still depended on overhead copper lines vulnerable to:
🌩️ Lightning
🌬️ Wind damage
🌳 Falling tree limbs
❄️ Ice storms

Moving lines underground dramatically improved service reliability throughout western Clinton County and helped protect the network from Indiana’s unpredictable weather and rural farming conditions.

These forward-thinking investments helped lay the foundation for the modern communications services our communities rely on today.

💸 Paul R. Jones & Randy L. Birge are the winners of May's $125 bill credit! Congrats to both of you and thank you for choosing Mulberry Telecommunications!

📣More on the History of Mulberry Telecommunications & our April Winners of the $125 Bill Credit.

💭Overview:
"By the 1940s, the cooperative had become a vital lifeline across western Clinton County and eastern Tippecanoe County—spanning a 10-mile square area with more than 650 miles of line connecting 600 telephones. Growth surged in the decades that followed and by 1966, Mulberry Cooperative Telephone Co. had nearly doubled the number of stations to around 1,200, marking a transformative era. Below is some more detailed information about that era and the dedicated employees who helped pave the way.

This progress was powered not just by infrastructure, but by people—the familiar voices who kept the community connected. Dedicated operators like Maxine Weflen, Florence Morrison, Audra Myers, Pam Hitch, Annabelle Hutchison and others were at the heart of daily communication, personally linking friends, families, and businesses.

Technology soon reshaped the landscape. In 1958, overhead lines were buried, modernizing the network and improving reliability. Just a few years later, in 1961, dial service was introduced—ushering in a new era, bringing an end to manual operator connections. By 1966, customers could enjoy direct distance dialing, and extended area service eliminated toll charges for nearby towns, making communication faster, easier, and more accessible than ever before."

📢Did You Know?
The original charter of the People Cooperative Telephone Company expired in 1927, and in 1929, it was renamed the Mulberry Cooperative Telephone Company. Metallic service, using two wires for the circuit, was installed the following year. Levi Kratzer (read more on Mr. Kratzer below) was the telephone operator for 32 years. Magneto service was in use for six decades. With that operation, it was necessary to crank a generator on the phone that sent a signal to the operator of the switchboard. She would then connect your line to whichever line you wanted to call. It was also possible to call others on your party line without involving the operator by ringing the code for the party being called.

☎️Operator, can you patch me through?
Levi Kratzer was a notable figure in the history of telephone operators in Mulberry, Indiana. He served as the telephone operator for 32 years and was instrumental in the development of the Mulberry Cooperative Telephone Company, which was founded in 1901. Kratzer was also responsible for transporting mail between the Mulberry post office and trains for 54 years, holding the contract with the government for this job until his death. His contributions to the local telephone service and community were significant, and he is remembered for his colorful personality and active community involvement.

To all of our current and past members, thank you for being a part of our History! We would not be celebrating 125 years without you!

In addition, every couple of weeks we’ll be sharing fun factoids and milestones from our 125-year journey—highlighting how we’ve grown and evolved while staying committed to serving you.

How we got started:
📞 Early beginnings (1901–1920s)
Founded in 1901 by Charles Combs and Joe Steckels as the Mutual Phone Company. In 1902, it was formally chartered as the People's Cooperative Telephone Company. The first telephone line connected the town’s post office and railroad station in Mulberry, Indiana. Early demand quickly grew—especially from a local mill—showing how important communication already was to business.
When a significant storm destroyed early lines, it pushed the community to organize a more formal telephone exchange.

🎉This month's winners are John Whitlock & Brandon Bolinger. Congratulations to you both. You will see a $125 Bill Credit on your April Statement!

The Next Winners will be announced around April 20th.

Thank you for being part of our story—here’s to the next 125 years!
