📣More on the History of Mulberry Telecommunications & our April Winners of the $125 Bill Credit.
💭Overview:
"By the 1940s, the cooperative had become a vital lifeline across western Clinton County and eastern Tippecanoe County—spanning a 10-mile square area with more than 650 miles of line connecting 600 telephones. Growth surged in the decades that followed and by 1966, Mulberry Cooperative Telephone Co. had nearly doubled the number of stations to around 1,200, marking a transformative era. Below is some more detailed information about that era and the dedicated employees who helped pave the way.
This progress was powered not just by infrastructure, but by people—the familiar voices who kept the community connected. Dedicated operators like Maxine Weflen, Florence Morrison, Audra Myers, Pam Hitch, Annabelle Hutchison and others were at the heart of daily communication, personally linking friends, families, and businesses.
Technology soon reshaped the landscape. In 1958, overhead lines were buried, modernizing the network and improving reliability. Just a few years later, in 1961, dial service was introduced—ushering in a new era, bringing an end to manual operator connections. By 1966, customers could enjoy direct distance dialing, and extended area service eliminated toll charges for nearby towns, making communication faster, easier, and more accessible than ever before."
