This brand is a representation and exploration of not only my personal identity but also where I see my work as a graphic designer taking me in the future. This brand plays with the balance of confidence, energy, and sophistication. From the strokes that create the logo to the typefaces used, to the colors explored, all nod back to confidence, energy, and sophistication. The logo is a simplistic wordmark that exhibits energy and sophistication within its contrasted line weights and flairs within the “y” descenders. The brand icon provides an identifying mark for the brand and allows for branded patterns and watermarks to be made. The coral brand color chosen connotes freshness, passion, and excitement, while still being bold and professional. The identity materials chosen to represent the brand show consistency within their clean and bright colors and layouts, and use consistent decorative elements.

Adoption Poster Series
Senior Graphic Design Project @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator, Indesign
COMPLETED: November 2021
DIMENSIONS: 3 posters 11"x17" each

This poster series is created to raise awareness and inform young couples of all the different adoption program options that are available. Specifically, those options that Nightlight Christian Adoptions offers. Large photographs of happy families draw the eye in, creating a sense of familiarity within the viewer and sparking compassion and hopefully a longing to want to adopt a child themselves. Once the viewer is captivated by the photo, a memorable title with a general call to action and a hopeful subheading will keep them wanting to know more. A statistic related to each corresponding type of adoption comes next in the hierarchy, followed by more specific information about the logistics of that specific type of adoption. The footer includes information about what this organization, Nightlight Christian Adoptions, does with and for adoptive parents through each process. The goal for these posters is for viewers to leave after reading them feeling hopeful and inspired, considering adoption as an option for their family.

Typographic Self Portrait
Graphic Design III @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator
COMPLETED: January 2021
DIMENSIONS: 10"x10"

This self portrait is formed entirely by the letters of my name. This was an artistic exploration of typography that allowed me to study the details of the letters and typefaces chosen and how they function visually. A cross-hatching style was used to create values from the varying spacing between the strokes of the letters. Different typefaces, Baskerville and Avenir, were used for the separation of hair, skin, and shirt based on their organic or geometric strokes and line weight contrast or lack thereof. These features correspond to the element that they end up creating, such as the organic nature of hair or the smooth consistent surface of skin. Varying sizes of the letters helped to separate these elements as well. The smallest details, such as the hair flyaways, tooth shapes, and slight variations within the skin tone were carefully considered to ensure these thousands of letters could come together to form the most realistic form possible.

Fiction Book Jacket
Senior Graphic Design Project @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator, Procreate
COMPLETED: October 2021
DIMENSIONS: 6.5"x9"

This book jacket was created for a young adult fiction book titled “Flowers That Last Forever.” The story is a sentimental one of a dying father creating everlasting wooden flowers for his wife and daughter. On the front cover, one of those special flowers are showcased, held in the hands of an old man that one would easily assume are the hands of the main character. This imagery catches the eye as hands are a very personal thing that all can relate to, and the uniqueness of the wooden flower creates curiosity. This illustration is done digitally in a soft airbrushed style to create a soft, dream-like, and sentimental feel. The shirt is a dark green color in order to really make the hands and flower pop, but also compliment them nicely. Green is a calming color and is also a nod to natural flower stems. The title is in a typeface that appears handwritten to add to the personal and sentimental feel of the cover. The yellow of the title pops against the dark green background, demanding attention and leaving a memorable punch to make it stand out among other YA books.

Autobiography Book Jacket
Senior Graphic Design Project @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator, Procreate
COMPLETED: October 2021
DIMENSIONS: 6.5"x9"

This book jacket was created for the nonfiction autobiography of Sydney Moon. Playing upon her last name, “Phases” is the title of the autobiography. The goal for the feel of the design was to be elegant with a touch of playfulness and sentimentality. The serif typeface chosen exhibits this elegance within its varying line weights and slanted serifs. The imagery is also a play on the author’s last name and the book title. Pictures of six different phases of Moon’s life were layered on top of six different moon phases, then they were all arranged into a half circle shape as a nod to the cycles of the moon phases. The pictures are all in black and white to create consistency and cohesiveness between them. This was all placed on a black and dark blue background with faint stars and galaxies within it to complete the atmosphere and give the moons a space to live. The back cover is laid out very simplistically with a touch of humor and a short summary of the book to pull readers in, as well as praise for the book from highly regarded critics in order to convince readers that they will enjoy the book too and they must purchase it.

SOFTWARE: Illustrator
COMPLETED: February 2022

This packaging is created for a spice blend company targeted at new cooks or those who want an easy way to make flavorful dishes. The small size of the tubes has many benefits including keeping the spices as fresh as possible, lowering the cost, and giving consumers a way to try out the spice a few times without committing to it long-term. Three spice tubes are packaged in a triangular prism that is efficient in saving space in a spice jar or cabinet, unique and easily identifiable, and is even decorative enough to display on a kitchen counter. The design and color choices help to enhance this aesthetic feature. A light tan color is used for the base background color throughout the packaging with accents of white and colors corresponding to each flavor variety. These colors are bright to connote flavorful, bright, delicious dishes. The typefaces chosen are simple and easy to read, and when paired with the colors and simple shapes of the designs, create a modern aesthetic that can appeal to a wide array of home cooks.

Children's Book Illustration
Senior Graphic Design Project @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator, Procreate
COMPLETED: October 2021
DIMENSIONS: 8"x8"

This children's book is written and illustrated for ages 4-5. The story is one of an ambitious raccoon’s journey to the moon and all her fun encounters along the way. The title, “June the Raccoon Journeys to the Moon!” plays with literary elements of rhyming and alliteration that will intrigue children and be easy for them to remember. The illustrations are done in a geometric cartoon style that provides some form to the characters but is still simple to appeal to the simple nature of children. June is the focal point of the illustration on each page, from different perspectives, and the scenery around her changes as she goes on her journey. Each illustration is captivating to children in its simple shapes, fun textures, and colorful variety. Yet this was still achieved by using only the shades and tints of 4 colors (green, blue, orange, gray), which helps the world that is created to be cohesive and stat familiar throughout the story. The typefaces chosen are simple and easy to read, placed in the negative background space of each illustration so that it is free from distractions and looks cohesive on each page.

Psalm 150 Poster
Graphic design III @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator Photoshop
COMPLETED: February 2021
DIMENSIONS: 13"x19"

This poster highlights Psalm 150 in a style directly inspired by David Carson. Carson is a self-taught designer who breaks all the typical “rules” of graphic design, but in a cohesive and artistic way. His use of distorted and collaged images are paired with altered and layered typography, all breaking any sort of grid structure. This poster carefully considered all of those elements and took direct inspiration from one of Carson’s posters in its color choices and layout. The goal is not for the reader to read and know the words of Psalm 150, but rather to feel the essence and spirit behind the verses. The large scale 0f “150” initially draws the eye in, then is guided around the page by the movement of the typography against the unique and abstracted images. Certain important parts of the verses are highlighted through color, repetition, scale, or seclusion from the other information. Just as Psalm 150 calls for uninhibited praise in these many forms, this poster emulates that spirit through its design.

Buchwald Center Brochure
Graphic Design III @ MVNU
SOFTWARE: Illustrator
COMPLETED: April 2021
GROUP PROJECT: with Madison Therrien & Liz Pound

This brochure was created for prospective MVNU students to introduce them to the Buchwald Center and the Art & Design department. It also serves as a self-tour guide for anyone to be able to guide themselves through the Buchwald Center and be able to identify rooms and know what they are for. The brochure is a unique design that we created, consisting of an envelope that opens up into many informational flaps, and a rubber-band activated cube that pops up and out of the envelope once it is opened. This cube creates an element of surprise and gives prospective students a souvenir object, with the purpose being to get them excited about joining the MVNU Art & Design family. The brochure envelope opens up to inside flaps that show pictures and information of each room in the Buchwald Center. These are organized by floor so that the viewer would easily be able to give themselves a self-guided tour. The back side of the flaps provides information about each of the majors, introduces the professors, and highlights some student work. We adhered to the MVNU brand guidelines for the color scheme and typeface choices so this brochure would be consistent with other marketing materials that MVNU produces. This brochure’s uniqueness serves as a functional but memorable keepsake that will attract prospective students and impress parents and others on their tour.

This infographic was designed to visually convey the information from the U.S. Department of Justice’s special report: “Rape and Sexual Assault Victimization Among College-Age Females, 1995–2013.” A correct use of varied hierarchy levels help to make some of the most important statistics catch the eye first, such as the number of victims per year, how many victims knew their offender, and how many assaults went unreported. Simple icons are used to help the reader further understand visually what each section of information is about. A faint line takes the viewer on a journey throughout the poster, guiding them from one piece of information to the next. The information is also organized into four different sections from top to bottom — victim, where and when, offender, and aftermath. The color scheme of varying tints of teal is a reference to the National Sexual Assault Month’s color scheme of teal so that viewers might connote the two. The poster not only provides viewers with much information but gives them a call to action at the bottom, “if you see something, say something” and the national sexual assault hotline number so that they can now help these victims of which they just learned the terrible reality of through this infographic.

SOFTWARE: Indesign, Photoshop
COMPLETED: April 2021
DIMENSIONS: 11"x17" Spreads

These editorial spreads were created for an imaginary magazine as a feature article of the Times New Roman typeface. The goal for this project was to create a two spread design that features the Times New Roman typeface, providing a biography of the designer, discussing the unique features of the typeface, and other elements. I focused on using the history of The Times Newspaper, in which Times New Roman began to gain its popularity, to influence my design to look like a vintage newspaper. This is carried throughout all elements of the spreads, from the heading and subheading being similar to how they were in The Times Newspaper, to the pictures being black and white like they were back then, to the three column grid that the layout is based upon. The large decorative elements provide information about the typeface while also balancing out the necessary text of the article. The layout is clearly categorized into the many different ways to feature the elements of Times New Roman.
