A pop-up telling you to call a number immediately can make a quiet afternoon feel like a game show you never entered.

If a warning on your computer says to call a number for urgent tech support, pause. Don't call the number in the pop-up, click its links, or let someone connect to your computer because the message told you to.

Microsoft says genuine Microsoft error messages don't include a phone number to call. A scary-looking window alone doesn't tell us what's actually happening.

Quick tech quiz: what is the square-ish connector on many printers called?

A. USB-A
B. USB-B
C. HDMI

Answer: USB-B. The Type-B end commonly plugs into the printer, while Type-A plugs into many computers. Some newer printers use other connections, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB-C, depending on the model.

Is your computer still running Windows 10? It didn’t turn into a pumpkin when support ended, but Microsoft’s regular Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. That means standard Windows 10 installations no longer receive Microsoft’s normal software and security updates or technical support.

Depending on the computer, the next step may be a supported Windows 11 upgrade, Consumer Extended Security Updates, or planning a replacement. The right answer depends on the hardware and how you use it.

When someone tells me, “My computer is slow,” my next question is: where is it slow? 😄

Does it take forever to start? Are programs slow to open? Or does everything feel fine until you use the internet?

Those symptoms can point to different causes, so the details matter. A slow website does not always mean the whole computer needs replacing, and a sluggish startup may have nothing to do with your Wi-Fi.
