Cybersecurity is entering an interesting new phase.

AI is starting to look for weaknesses before attackers can exploit them.

It sounds impressiveโ€ฆ and it is.

But thereโ€™s an important reason businesses still canโ€™t afford to ignore the basicsโ€ฆ

AI voice assistants will become genuinely useful for businesses over the next few years. The technology is improving quickly, and in the right environment, it can remove a lot of repetitive work.

Most businesses field a handful of phone calls that come up again and again. "What time do you open?""Can I change my appointment?""Has my order been dispatched?""Can somebody call me back?" These are all reasonable questions from someone who doesn't know the business. But when your team answers the...

One question I hear more and more is: "Can I trust AI to tell me whether something is a scam?"

Until recently, I would have been cautious about that. AI is great at explaining things, but when it comes to cybersecurity, being almost right isn't good enough.

That's what makes this latest development worth paying attention to. Norton has integrated its Genie scam detection tool into both Claude and ChatGPT. Now people can ask an AI assistant to help assess whether an email, text message, website, or online offer looks suspicious.

The AI isn't giving its own opinion here. It's drawing on Norton's scam detection technology, which looks for things like impersonation, pressure tactics, suspicious links, and requests for sensitive information. It's combining the conversational strengths of AI with technology built specifically to spot scams.

That said, this doesn't mean people should stop thinking for themselves. If an email claims your bank account is about to be closed, or a supplier suddenly asks you to change their payment details, you should still verify it independently. Tools like this work best as a second opinion, not a final answer.

Online scams are harder to spot than they were even a few years ago. Criminals are using AI to write more convincing emails, build more believable websites, and clean up the spelling mistakes that used to give them away. Anything that helps people pause and sense-check what they're looking at is a step in the right direction.

I can see this becoming part of everyday working life too. Instead of forwarding a suspicious email to a colleague and asking, "Does this look right to you?", people may start asking an AI assistant first. It should never replace security awareness or solid internal processes, but it could help you make a better decision before you click a link or reply to a message.

Would you trust an AI assistant to help you spot a scam, or would you rather rely on your own judgment?

When was the last time you actually looked at the browser extensions installed on your computer?

If you're like most people, the answer is probably never. Once an extension is installed and working, it fades into the background and you stop thinking about it.

That's why this latest news from Microsoft caught my attention. Microsoft removed 119 malicious extensions from the Edge Add-ons store after discovering they had been downloaded around 2.6 million times. These were everyday tools like ad blockers, PDF editors, VPNs, translators, and video downloaders. On the surface, they all looked legitimate.

The tricky part is how patient they were. Many of the extensions waited days before doing anything harmful, making them much harder to detect. Once active, some stole browser data, redirected users to malicious sites, or downloaded additional software.

It's a reminder that attackers are just as happy hiding inside software we already trust as they are sending a suspicious email.

Most extensions are safe and useful. But they're worth treating like any other software:

If you don't use it, remove it.
If you don't recognize it, look into it.
If it asks for excessive permissions, ask why.

The more useful something seems, the less likely we are to question it. That's exactly what attackers are counting on.

How many extensions do you think are installed on your computer right now, and could you name them all?

These groups aren't operating with any sense of fairness or responsibility. They're not trying to do the right thing. They're trying to gain leverage, create pressure, and ultimately make money.

Cybercriminals arguing with each other might sound like good news. One group targeting another, threats flying back and forth, even promises to "help" victims caught in the crossfire. It can almost feel like justice being served. But here's the reality: there's only one thing you can rely on cybercr...
