One of the COOST Experiences in Boston: Linoleum Block Printing 🖼️

Carving your own artwork into linoleum blocks and running them through a real letterpress is way easier to learn than it looks. You get to work with professional tools, troubleshoot your design, and pull real proofs right inside a commercial studio. It’s the kind of hands-on project where you start with a blank block and leave with fully editioned art prints. 🎨

You’ll start by carving your design directly into wood-mounted linoleum blocks using specialized carving tools. Once the block is ready, you’ll set it up on the press and make small adjustments to get the exact paper positioning, inking, and printing pressure you need. ✏️

Throughout the session, you’ll troubleshoot any issues, make changes to your block, and pull several test proofs to refine your work. The instructor also shows you how wood-mounted blocks hit the exact height required for letterpress printing so you understand how the machinery actually works. 🖨️

By the end, you’ll have pulled several finished prints using the studio setup. Plus, you’ll learn non-press printing techniques so you can keep carving and pulling prints at home with your own starter kit or tools. 🖼️

what to expect at Boston’s only Hobbit Mug Making Workshop 🧙‍♂️

Building your own Hobbit-inspired mug out of raw clay is something you can try without any prior pottery experience. An instructor provides pre-formed greenware pieces as the starting point, so the work centers on adding your own sculpted features and painted details. You finish both the sculpting and glazing work together in a single sitting. 🍺

Starting with pre-formed greenware mugs means skipping the initial wheel throwing or base shaping steps. You add details using clay tools, working directly on the damp surface to attach sculpted elements from your own ideas or starting inspiration. 🏺

Once the session wraps up, the pieces are brought to a studio for firing, which takes about two to three weeks depending on thickness. The finished result is a microwave and dishwasher safe stoneware piece available for in-person venue pickup or shipping. 📦
