From referral to resolution—in hours.

In Western Maryland, a critical need was resolved the same day after sitting unresolved for over a week.

Not because more services were added.
Because the system was finally connected.

That’s what happens when public health teams have visibility from screening → referral → resolution.

Honored to announce that Chris Nickerson is joining the Board of Directors for AHEC West during the organization’s milestone 50th anniversary year.

Chris shared, "For five decades, AHEC West has played an important role in strengthening healthcare access, workforce development, and community partnerships across Western Maryland — and I’m excited to support the next chapter of that work alongside Melissa Clark, MPA, CCHW, CPRSS, and the entire AHEC West team.

As rural communities continue navigating workforce shortages, access gaps, and increasing demands on healthcare systems, I believe technology and connected infrastructure have an important role to play in helping communities collaborate more effectively and measure impact in meaningful ways.

What excites me most about AHEC West is its commitment to building a stronger ecosystem — bringing together healthcare providers, educators, community organizations, and public health partners to expand access to care and services throughout the region.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute a business and technology perspective to the board and to support the incredible work Melissa and the team continue to lead across Western Maryland."

Congratulations to Chris and the entire AHEC West team on 50 years of impact.

Public health reporting gaps most programs don't catch until it's too late:

1️⃣ The referral loop is left open.
A need is identified. A referral is placed.
But no one confirms the service was actually delivered.
The funder sees a referral rate. They don't see a completion rate.
→ That's a problem at reporting time.

2️⃣ SDoH screening isn't connected to follow-up action.
A patient screens positive for housing instability. The result is documented.
But there's no automated pathway to a resource, no status tracking, no resolution record.
→ Screening without routing is just data collection.

3️⃣ Workforce training lives in a silo.
CHW certifications and navigator training are documented somewhere — usually in a separate system.
They're not tied to patient touchpoints or program outcomes.
→ When funders ask how your workforce investment translates to better referral rates- most programs can't answer that.

All three are solvable with the right infrastructure in place before you go live.

Happy to share the KPI framework we built around these - reply or DM and we'll send it over.

We’re honored that our OpEd “Healthcare Access Is Economic Infrastructure — Especially in Rural Maryland” was published today in the Baltimore Business Journal.

Access to healthcare isn’t just a health issue — it’s a workforce and economic issue. When people can’t get the care they need close to home, it affects productivity, talent attraction, and the stability of employers across the state.

In the piece, we explore why healthcare access should be thought of as economic infrastructure — especially in rural Maryland — and how this perspective can help communities, employers, and policymakers work together to strengthen our workforce and economy.

With significant state and federal rural health funding now being deployed, this is a pivotal moment to invest not just in programs, but in the infrastructure that makes them work. WellCheck is proud to partner with organizations building stronger, more connected systems — and we welcome conversations with leaders looking for technology and coordination solutions to support their grant strategies.

Thank you to the BBJ for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation and to all of our partners working to close gaps in access and opportunity across Maryland.

New read for anyone tracking rural health funding:

KFF just published an analysis of first-year RHT awards and found big differences in funding per rural resident across states.

If you’re part of rural health, public health, community services, or a provider network, this is helpful context for what implementation and reporting may look like in 2026.

Article link: https://www.kff.org/state-health-policy-data/first-year-rural-health-fund-awards-range-from-less-than-100-per-rural-resident-in-ten-states-to-more-than-500-in-eight/

This policy watch evaluates state awards through the rural health fund in 2026, the first year of the program. The analysis shows relatively modest variations in total awards this year across states but wide variation in how much states will receive per rural resident.
