At the Twin Cities IEEE-MTT workshop on December 13th, 2018, the presenters demonstrated that the ISM (2400-2500 MHz) power-charging system can interfere with WiFi and Bluetooth communication systems, especially Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) medical-implant communication systems. To resolve the interference issues, we hope that Apple and other companies will soon support the new MBAN (Medical Body Area Network) frequency band for medical devices, especially medical implants. The FCC has approved the allocation of 40 MHz of spectrum bandwidth for medical BAN low-power, wide-area radio links at the 2360–2400 MHz band. This will allow off-loading MBAN communication from the already saturated standard ISM (2400-2500 MHz) spectrum to a standard band. Apple Watch Series 4 is capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. It is a wireless medical device! Keep in mind that WiFi systems can also interfere with BLE systems. Both the FDA and the FCC have found the presentations of the workshop very interesting. The impact of the workshop can be significant!

Dr. Diana M. Yoon - Lead Reviewer at the FDA will discuss the approval process for medical devices, including BLE medical devices at the Dec 13th, 2018 Twin Cities IEEE-MTT workshop. This workshop is a free-of-charge event for engineers and managers interested in learning how to implement Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless technology into a variety of applications, including sensors, body-worn devices, and medical devices. Attendees will learn processes and approaches used to set requirements, design, test, and manufacture BLE devices & systems, including regulatory approval processes. A continental breakfast, snacks and lunch buffet are provided for free. If you plan to attend the workshop, please send a request to Dr. David Nghiem of Global Wireless Technology (GWT), Chair of the Technical Program: [email protected] before December 10th, 2018! To get an updated agenda for the workshop, visithttp://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/IEEE_MTT_Workshop_Dec_13_2018.pdf .....

GWT's founder, Dr. David Nghiem, had a discussion with Steve Jobs on "iPhone 4 Antenna: Issues & Solutions" in 2010 and was glad to know that iPhone 5 & later have better antenna designs. GWT has also provided the industry and the consumer with a simple solution that helps improve the cell-phone system performance, save energy, prolong battery life, and reduce radiation at no cost:http://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/gwt.pdf

Dr. David Nghiem has been working on the cell-phone issues & solutions for many years. The Vice President of the United States, Al Gore has recognized Dr. Nghiem's measures to ensure quality service, performance, and consumer safety:http://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/Al_Gore.pdf

The FCC 47 C.F.R. Part 18: 18.305 (a) states that ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) equipment operating on a frequency specified in 18.301 (including 2,450 MHz +/-50 MHz & 5,800 MHz +/-75 MHz) is permitted unlimited radiated energy in the band for that frequency. However, ISM equipment such as 2,450 MHz-band & 5,800 MHz-band transmitters (emitters) should meet the FCC limit of 10 W/m2 for the power density regarding RF far-field safety. According to the FCC, although categorically excluded from routine RF exposure evaluation, Part 18 equipment & devices are not exempted from RF exposure compliance! As compared to a typical Wi-Fi router, a wireless far-field power-charging (power transfer at distance) system can far exceed the FCC limits on the power density due to its high power & high antenna gain. A 2,450 MHz-band far-field power-charging system can also interfere with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) medical communication systems. Global Wireless Technology (GWT) has developed a cost-effective, practical & safe technology for wireless power-charging applications. GWT has also developed an efficient & robust wireless data/power system for contact-less connector applications: http://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/gwtwpc.jpg

A surgical headlamp system could interfere with the Medical Implant Communication System (MICS: 402 MHz – 405 MHz). Also, to avoid the heavily overloaded Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE: 2400 MHz – 2483.5 MHz) frequency band, Global Wireless Technology (GWT) is proud to provide the industry with a reliable and cost-effective Medical Body Area Network (MBAN: 2360 MHz – 2400 MHz) system for a variety of medical applications that require smartphones to monitor medical devices.

The antenna of wireless implants will trap more unwanted electromagnetic fields. Since the electromagnetic fields of MRI scanners are very strong, wireless implants may not survive when undergoing MRI scans. For MRI safety, it is very crucial to determine the true conservative scenario for MRI survivability & compatibility testing. Global Wireless Technology (GWT) has shared with the FDA its reliable & cost-effective measurement methodology that can measure the MRI energy coupled to the implant antenna, including implant leads. Keep in mind that the leads are a part of the implant antenna system. We need to make sure that the implant antenna system does not radiate at the MRI radio frequencies. Also, keep in mind that a surgical head-lamp system could interfere with Medical Implant Communication System (MICS) implants. To help the industry further, GWT has developed reliable and cost-effective MRI safety & compatibility technologies for medical devices and bio-sensors.

A conventional dipole antenna has a symmetrical (balanced) feed-point. Global Wireless Technology (GWT) has introduced a simple concept: "A Dipole Antenna with an Asymmetrical (unbalanced) Feed-point" that could be employed to model an implant antenna systemhttp://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/DAFP.pdf ... Keep in mind that implant leads are a part of the implant antenna system. We need to make sure that the implant antenna system does not radiate at the MRI radio frequencies! Otherwise, wireless implants may not survive when undergoing MRI scans due to the very strong electromagnetic fields of MRI scanners.

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is a measure of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to the cell-phone radiation. The user's hand can significantly reduce the SAR in the head. However, the SAR in the hand can be very high. Global Wireless Technology (GWT) has developed a simple SAR test setup for the true conservative scenario that also takes the user's hand effects into account. Here is a simple thing that you can do to significantly reduce both the head & hand SAR, improve your cell-phone antenna efficiency, save energy, and prolong battery life at no cost:http://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/gwt.pdf

If the cell-phone antenna is too close to the head, body or hand, the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) may far exceed the FCC limits. Here is a simple thing that you can do to significantly reduce the SAR level and improve the antenna efficiency: WHILE IN USE, DO NOT COVER THE CELL-PHONE ANTENNA AREA & DO DISTANCE THE ANTENNA AS FAR AWAY FROM YOUR HEAD OR BODY AS POSSIBLE! To help both the industry & the consumer, Global Wireless Technology (GWT) has shared its concerns & solutions with the FCC and the FDA:http://www.globalwirelesstechnology.com/upload/gwt.pdf
