Week 7: Flint, Michigan. Desert score 91.

Flint's water crisis dominates the narrative, but beneath it is an equally severe youth sports access crisis driven by population collapse and institutional withdrawal.

Flint's population fell from 140,000 to under 95,000. After 2014, public dollars shifted overwhelmingly to health remediation. Multiple community centers serving youth sports closed. The Index found the remaining Boys & Girls Club chapter overwhelmed and underfunded.

The kids who lived through the water crisis are the same kids with nowhere to play. Those are not two problems. They are one.

The fix the research points to: targeted nonprofit partnerships pairing youth sports access with the broader public health recovery, supported by affordable insurance and shared facilities, so under-capacity organizations can serve more children.

Helping overwhelmed organizations serve more kids safely is precisely the gap the Players Health Foundation fills.

The fitness facilities we insure know more about their risk than their competitors do.

Square footage. Programming mix. Staff certifications. Incident history. Your risk profile is more specific than a generic gym policy and your insurance should be too.

Most fitness facility insurance stops at basic parameters like square footage, revenue, class types. Players Health goes further.

We know a facility with certified trainers, strong incident reporting, and documented safety procedures is a better risk than one without. So we don't just write the policy and walk away. We show you where your risk actually sits, and we give you the tools to reduce it.

When you work with Players Health, you get coverage backed by a risk platform built for the operation you run and evidence of the work you're doing to make it safer.

Week 6: Detroit, Michigan. Desert score 92.

Once home to robust recreation leagues tied to the auto industry, Detroit's fiscal collapse systematically eliminated youth sports infrastructure. The 2013 municipal bankruptcy accelerated a decades-long dismantling: by the city's own count, Detroit has closed more than 20 recreation centers since the 1980s. The school district closed roughly 200 schools between 2000 and 2015, and every closed school took its teams with it. The Index research found parks and rec funding dropped by over 60% in real terms between 2000 and 2020, and most JV and freshman athletics were eliminated.

Today, the Index estimates, remaining programming reaches just 8 to 12% of eligible youth.

Here is what a closed rec center actually costs: the coach who notices a kid first. The safe hours between 3 and 6 pm. The team that becomes the reason to stay in school.

The fix the research points to: affordable liability coverage for surviving community leagues, philanthropic reinvestment in rec centers, and partnership between Detroit Public Schools and corporate sponsors to restore JV and freshman programs.

Coverage that keeps community leagues alive plus funding that reopens doors: that is the Players Health playbook, commercial and Foundation together.

We don't just insure your organization. We help you understand your risk.

Any insurer can hand you a policy. Players Health shows you what's driving your risk — and gives you the tools to reduce it.

Players Health is built specifically for the sports and fitness industry — which means we start with a more precise understanding of your exposure than any general commercial insurer can offer.

Your general liability protects your organization when negligence is alleged. Your participant accident (A&H) coverage pays your athletes' medical bills when they're injured in your program, no lawsuit required. Your abuse and molestation coverage closes the gap neither of those lines address.

Knowing which line does what — and making sure you have all of them — is where we start. But we go further.

When you insure with Players Health, you get access to our risk management and safety platform that connects your coverage to your actual safety data. Better safety practices. Better risk profile. Better long-term premiums.

This is what makes Players Health different. It starts with a quote.

Week 5: Youngstown, Ohio. Desert score 93.

Youngstown has lost 60% of its population since 1970. The steel industry collapse created a fiscal death spiral: the state stripped local control of the schools in 2015 under the Youngstown Plan, extracurricular athletics were cut year after year, and the Index found a parks system that cannot fund youth sports at all.

What remains is sustained by a handful of volunteers with no institutional support.

Read that again. In a city of tens of thousands of kids, youth sports survive because a few adults refuse to let them die.

The fix the research points to: a regional model for Rust Belt cities. Pooled-risk insurance products designed for small post-industrial communities, combined with state grants restoring school athletic baselines. Youngstown, Gary, Flint, and Detroit share the same wound; they can share the same treatment.

Standing behind volunteers with funding, training, and coverage is exactly what the Players Health Foundation does.

Directors and officers coverage: the protection your board doesn't know they need.

Your board members give their time to your organization. Does your insurance protect them if a decision goes wrong?

Directors and officers liability (D&O) is one of the most overlooked lines of coverage in the sports and fitness world ; and one of the most important for organizations run by boards, committees, or volunteer leadership.

D&O covers your organization's leadership against claims alleging wrongful acts, mismanagement, employment decisions, or breach of fiduciary duty. Without it, board members can be personally liable for decisions made in their organizational role.

If you run a nonprofit club, a recreational league, a fitness facility with a management team, or any organization with a board, this coverage belongs in your portfolio.

Players Health makes it easy to get the full picture.

Week 4: Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Desert score 93.

Pine Bluff is the clearest rural-urban hybrid desert in the Index: a small city where the state took over the school district in 2018, the Index found no club infrastructure at all, and recreation facilities sit in severe disrepair. The population has fallen from 57,000 to under 40,000, hollowing the tax base underneath what remained.

Pine Bluff matters beyond Pine Bluff. The Index found this same pattern across small Southern cities: the school district is the only provider left, and it is in financial distress.

The fix the research points to: a small-market community league insurance product priced for low-income rural cities, paired with USDA rural community grant programs. Solve it here and the model serves dozens of Pine Bluff-like communities across the South.

Making coverage affordable for the smallest operators is core Players Health work, and funding what coverage alone cannot fix is the Foundation's.

Cyber liability isn't just for tech companies. If you store member data, you're exposed.

Member names. Payment information. Health data. Your gym collects it all — and that makes you a target.

Fitness facilities collect and store more sensitive member data than most small businesses realize — billing information, health history, emergency contacts, locker access codes. A data breach affecting your member records is a real liability event, and it's one that standard general liability does not cover.

Cyber liability insurance covers the cost of breach notification, credit monitoring for affected members, legal defense, and regulatory fines. For facilities using third-party software systems, it also covers costs related to a vendor breach that exposes your member data.

This is one of the fastest-growing coverage areas in the fitness industry. Players Health can make sure it's part of your program.
