Ryan Leonard, a Senior Applied AI Solutions Architect at phData, just earned his Amazon Web Services Golden Jacket, with certifications across the Foundational, Associate, Professional, and Specialty tracks.

Token usage tells you what AI costs. It doesn’t tell you what it’s worth.

A $9B+ cruise line calculated employee incentives on a decade-old Oracle and MS Access system. Every daily run took 6 to 8 hours, and nobody could safely change it.

Each of its three brands had its own rules, and a decade of them had gone undocumented. Every exception meant another Access workaround.

phData rebuilt the logic as modular dbt models on Snowflake Inc., with validation checks that reconcile every run against the legacy output.

The results:
→ Daily batch time down from 6-8 hours to 3-4 hours
→ Less than 1% variance from legacy output, confirmed before cutover
→ 3 brands on 1 platform, with the Oracle and MS Access systems retired
→ Rebuild and migration finished in about 6 to 7 months

Finance and operations gained confidence in the numbers without line-by-line audits. Business users now handle exceptions like split commissions in a Streamlit app, and the incentive logic is auditable and maintainable for the first time.

dbt Labs says the data foundation that makes analytics trustworthy is the same one that makes AI trustworthy.

At dbt Summit, dbt made dbt v2 and dbt State generally available (dbt reports an average 15-30%+ drop in warehouse compute with dbt State). It also announced dbt Wizard, an agent built for analytics engineering (public preview), and out-of-the-box context integrations with Anthropic and a plugin for ChatGPT.

The Sigma Computing API wants a workbook ID. The ID in your workbook URL is the wrong one.

Use it anyway, and you get a 404 with no hint why. Rodrigo Finguer shows how to find the right one in the clip.

Why bother? Sigma's Workbooks-as-Code API (currently a private beta) exports a workbook as a YAML file, so Git can diff it, review it, and keep the history. "Who changed the revenue filter in March?" becomes a git log query.

Rodrigo wrote up the rest in the blog: the 4 GitHub secrets and 2 shell scripts, the regional API host your browser URL can't always tell you, and a scheduled sync that commits about every 30 minutes, but only when the workbook has changed.

He also covers where the beta falls short today. Write-back into Sigma only works for the simplest workbooks.
