🚨 Think Before You Scan That QR Code 🚨

QR codes are everywhere these days:

âś… Restaurant menus
âś… Parking meters
âś… Package deliveries
âś… Utility bills
âś… Event registrations

Unfortunately, scammers know we’re trained to trust them.

A fake QR code sticker placed over a legitimate one can send you to a convincing-looking website designed to steal passwords, credit card numbers, banking information, or personal data.

Before you scan:

🔹 Look closely for stickers placed over existing QR codes
🔹 Verify the website address before entering any information
🔹 Be cautious of QR codes found in public places
🔹 Never rush because a message claims your account will be locked or a payment is overdue
🔹 When in doubt, visit the organization’s website directly instead of using the QR code

Remember: A QR code is simply a shortcut to a website. If you wouldn’t click a suspicious link in an email, don’t blindly trust a QR code either.

The safest security tool isn’t software—it’s taking a moment to slow down and think before you act.

I’m honored to be featured in the Pierce County Journal for an upcoming community presentation on cybersecurity.

On June 9, I’ll be speaking at the Ellsworth Public Library's Discover Together Tuesday program, sharing five practical things anyone can do right now to improve their online security.

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that cybercrime only affects large companies or highly technical users. In reality, most of the incidents I help people recover from involve everyday individuals, families, retirees, and small business owners who simply weren't aware of the risks.

We'll be covering:
• Stronger password habits
• Two-factor authentication
• Email and scam awareness
• Safe computing practices
• Data backup basics

My goal is always the same: make technology easier to understand and help people stay safer online without the technical jargon.

A big thank you to the Ellsworth Public Library and the Discover Together Tuesday program for the opportunity to share this information with the community.

What do you think is the biggest cybersecurity threat facing everyday people today?

I checked my Privacy & Security settings on my Mac a while back and found that Zoom had screen recording access. I didn't remember turning that on, and honestly wasn't sure when it happened.

The truth is most of us click "Allow" when an app asks for permission and move on. I know I do - It's just part of getting something to work. The problem is those permissions don't expire, and over time you end up with a list of apps that have access to things you've completely forgotten about.

It takes about five minutes to see what's actually there. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click through Camera, Microphone, and Screen & System Audio Recording. You'll see every app that has access and can turn off anything that doesn't need it.

If Monday consistently feels overwhelming, the fix rarely involves working through the weekend. More often, it comes down to how the previous week ended.

A few habits worth building into your Friday routine:

âś… Write down your top three priorities for Monday before you close out
âś… Clear your inbox to a manageable state rather than leaving it open-ended
âś… Block focused time on Monday morning before the day fills up
âś… Set a firm end time on Friday, and treat it like any other commitment

A calmer Monday usually starts with a more intentional Friday.

What's one thing you do at the end of the week to set yourself up?

If you've ever received an attachment that gave you pause, Dangerzone is worth knowing about. It converts potentially dangerous documents into clean, pixel-only PDFs, stripping out any hidden code, macros, or embedded content before you ever read a word.

Mac's USB-C ports look identical, but one is designated as the DFU port, and using the wrong one at the wrong time can cause unexpected failures. If you've ever seen a cryptic error during a macOS installation on an external drive, this might be why.

Read on to learn when it matters which port you use: https://www.themacguys.com/not-all-your-macs-usb-c-ports-are-the-same/

Smonday is real, but it doesn't have to be dreaded.

A little Friday prep goes a long way: wrap up loose ends, set your priorities for the week ahead, and give yourself permission to actually enjoy Sunday. Monday lands softer when you're ready for it.

What's one thing you do to set yourself up before the weekend?

If your inbox has 8,000 unread emails, we’re not judging.

But here’s a 5-minute fix:

✔ Use “Rules” in Outlook or Gmail
(Automatically sort newsletters into folders.)
✔ Use “Unsubscribe” (yes, it works).
âś” Block 2 daily email check times instead of reacting constantly.

This should help cut down on some of the noise to help you focus on what is most important.

macOS 26.4 Tahoe adds two new battery features for MacBook users: a Charge Limit setting and a Slow Charger warning.

Charge Limit lets you set a maximum charge level between 80% and 100%. Your Mac charges to that ceiling and stops, reducing wear on the battery over time. If you rarely unplug your MacBook from your desk, setting an 80% limit is an easy way to extend its lifespan without much inconvenience.

The Slow Charger warning takes the guesswork out of charging issues. If your adapter isn't delivering enough wattage for your Mac model, you'll now see a notice in the battery menu and in System Settings, explaining why your machine might be charging slowly or losing charge while in use.

Both features work alongside the existing Optimized Battery Charging setting, and both can be overridden when you need a full charge before a long day away from power.
