Voting is open for Spoonflower's Patchwork Revival challenge - my entry Tour de Citrus.

A friend who rides with a cycling group (hi Lynn!) asked if I had any bike designs. I've drawn more than 1,800 patterns and didn't have a single bicycle, which tells you everything about how sporty I am not. So I made one. Well, sort of. It started with bike wheels filled with bike chain and tire tread patterns. I liked it well enough in the gray and blue I'd started with, and the gray tires really read as wheels. Then I tried to a palette of warm pink and gold, which changed the vibe from a rainy day to a citrusy, fun summer vibe. This made me happy. I hope it makes you happy too!

New design, new challenge, do you have time to vote?

"Toile de Vie" is my entry in the Modern Toile challenge. It's a classic toile de Jouy in a fresh aqua colorway — nesting bird pairs, spring blooms, a baby squirrel, and hearts carved into the bark if you look closely (there's even a hidden love note tucked in there, just for my husband). I entered it in aqua, though it comes in blossom pink, spring green, and sky blue too.

This one comes right on the heels of Breaking Plaid landing 10th place — my 10th top-10 finish in three years of these challenges — so I'm feeling lucky and a little greedy. Let's see if we can make it eleven.

Well, this one snuck up on me: Breaking Plaid just landed 10th place out of 1,634 entries in Spoonflower's Elevated Classics challenge! Yahoo!!

And it turns out that's my 10th top-10 finish since I started entering these challenges three years ago. Ten for ten - awesome! Not bad for a plaid I drew to settle a decades-old grudge with my old school uniform.

I spent a decade in a plaid school uniform and the constraint of that marked me — long term. So now, as an adult with a design degree and unresolved feelings about tartan, I did the only sane thing: I broke it. Ran wavey lines straight through that stiff little grid until it finally relaxed.

Breaking Plaid is my entry in the challenge. For me and every other kid who bucked the system, I hope you'll consider casting a vote.

Hoohoo! My Pretty in Pinky design placed 26th out of 1,384 entries in Spoonflower's Hydrangea design challenge — top 2%!

Extra sweet given this one started with Mom pointing at her Pinky Winky hydrangea shrub and saying "use that." She was right. (I know, I know.)

Mom's garden is my inspiration this time. If you don't know Genie, you don't know she's famous for her gardening. Her own garden is a work of art and she's always there to help out on other people's gardens. Oh - and she has very strong opinions.

We were sipping coffee in her garden a couple weeks ago when I wondered aloud what I should create for the Hydrangea challenge. She immediately pointed at her amazing pinky winky hydrangea shrub, growing right behind where I was sitting.

While she always offers helpful ideas, I mostly say thanks and then do my own thing. But sometimes, her idea wins! I took some reference pics of her pinky winky that day and the result is my entry "Pretty in Pinky". I even worked in some bee balm, also in her garden that day.

I entered my spooky design, "The Grand Macabre." I went full-on goth with this one - gargoyles, moths, owls, and a bat or two, all tucked into pointed arches and aged like they've been guarding an ancient crumbling cathedral.
