October is National Pedestrian Safety Month - a good time to ask whether a crossing treatment matches the roadway.

A marked crosswalk helps identify where people should cross. But on multilane roads carrying more than 10,000 vehicles per day, FHWA says a marked crosswalk alone is typically not sufficient.

Traffic volume, speed, lane count, sight lines, and pedestrian activity all matter when evaluating what else a location may need. Depending on site conditions, that could include a pedestrian beacon, a refuge island, visibility improvements, or a combination of treatments.
