Feeling like your business is running you instead of the other way around?

Take a look and see if this is you?

(Psst… if your answer is “yes” to more than one, we should talk.)

Aging is so glamorous! I earned a new accessory this week. Reading glasses! 🤓

Turns out, squinting, better lighting, and holding things at just the right angle still didn’t make the words clearer.

Putting them on for the first time this morning made me think about business being kind of the same.

We try to zoom in on the problem.
Shift our perspective.
Adjust the lighting.

But sometimes, things are still not clear.
That’s when you need help—someone who knows exactly how to clear the clutter and sharpen the view.

For my eyes, it was reading glasses.
For your business? It might be a partner to help you focus. You focus on the parts you want to handle, while I take care of the rest.

(PS: If your inbox, systems, or team management is looking a little blurry right now—I know a good OBM 😉)

A few years ago, I invested in a consultant's limited-time offer to help business owners refine their messaging. I was eager to learn and grow my business, so I paid the fee, completed the intake forms, and began following them across social media.

That's when things shifted.

I noticed this consultant had posted about someone who "wasn't an ideal client" who had "slipped through their systems." Reading between the lines, I realized they were talking about me. As someone early in my journey, without the experience level of their typical clients, I felt immediately undervalued.

This experience completely shifted my perception of this professional. By publicly complaining about a client who didn't fit their ideal mold, they sent a clear message: some people aren't worth their time. I get it. Time is valuable and we need to spend it focused on the opportunities that grow our business, but we can be kind while we do it.

I never followed through with the advice - money wasted because of how they made me feel. During our initial call, I even thanked them for meeting with me "despite not normally working with clients like me." They tried to deny it, but did not do a great job.

This experience confirmed an important business value for me:
Everyone deserves respect, whether they're your ideal client or not.

If someone isn't the right fit for my services - whether due to service alignment, budget constraints, or personality differences, I still commit to

Being kind and respectful
Never making them feel "less than"
Referring them to other professionals when possible
Cheering them on in their journey
And certainly never complaining about them on social media

As we enter Q2, I'm recommitting to these values in my business. Success doesn't require stepping on others to elevate yourself.

What business values are you carrying into this new quarter?

Tournament weekend: 6AM Sunday, hotel hallway, my husband juggling three bags while dragging my suitcase.

These moments remind me how lucky I am. He consistently handles the small things that make our volleyball tournament weekends run smoothly – loading the car, packing the cooler, grabbing my coffee...

All so I can focus on getting #8 where she needs to be, making sure she has everything, and being there to cheer her on from the sidelines.

We're a strong team, and I'll really miss him this weekend when he's on shift and I'm solo-parenting at the tournament!

This got me thinking... isn't this exactly what makes businesses thrive too? Behind every successful business owner is a support system handling the details so they can focus on the game.

The most valuable asset in any venture – whether family or business – is a team that shows up for you, even at 6AM on a Sunday.

If you're building your business but feel overwhelmed trying to do it all alone, maybe it's time to create that support system. Let's connect and talk about what that could look like for you.

Early last night we quickly transitioned from a tornado watch to a warning. My weather radio went off and then my phone quickly followed.

My first step was to get the kids and the dog safely in the laundry room. Check.
Then I turn on the TV with the volume up for storm updates.
I had enough time to slip my wedding ring on, grab some extra insulin, our diabetes travel bag, an extra charger and off to the laundry room I went. Husband was at the firestation of course. Part of the B-shift curse.

Luckily, the bad weather didn't stick and we were all fine here. It was scary to hear that a storm chaser was driving around our area just waiting for the show.

All of this made me think about how do you weather proof your business? How do you make sure it can withstand a storm?

My go to is documentation!!! Make sure those SOPs are recorded, organized and kept up to date.

The one thing keeping my sanity intact when my notifications are blowing up? My running shoes.

Being the right-hand person in multiple businesses means my brain is on overdrive, juggling systems, team needs, daily operations, and any fires that pop up. The mental code switching can be a lot, and I have to take a break before documenting or reviewing anything else.

When I start to feel this way, I know it's time to lace up my running shoes.

I'm not training for the Olympics or chasing PRs. For me, running is my brain's reset button. If I can get outside and get 2-3 miles of pavement under me, things start to get clearer. I can refocus and make a plan to keep me and the team on track.

Between being a mom, fire wife, and keeping multiple businesses running smoothly (pun intended), I've learned that sometimes the most productive thing I can do is step away from the desk and just move.

I don't need a fancy training plan. Just time outside on the open road and everything will come together.

Do you have a reset button?

I never planned to leave the classroom, but I took on a role no one else wanted, and it uncovered the skills that shape what I do today.

Coordinating school-wide testing pushed me outside my comfort zone. I built systems from scratch, trained staff, and kept everything running smoothly (even when things didn’t go as planned because they never do! 😅).

That experience taught me three big lessons:
💪 Your skills translate to new challenges
📈 Growth happens outside your comfort zone
🤩 Leadership is about adaptability, not knowing it all

Now, as an Online Business Manager, I use those same skills to help business owners create workflows, manage teams, and build systems that work. Those testing coordinator days taught me to have a plan but be flexible!

We all have those 'what did I just do' moments in business (and life).

One that I will never forget was when I sent an email that said [hold for email] to a smart list because of an automation workflow error. That's it. That was the entire email. I was waiting on the draft to be approved and had placed that phrase so I could build out the workflow. 🤦‍♀️ I saw my placeholder email come through just as I finished my workout and ran out of the gym to nervously call my client.

But, do you know what they did? They laughed and shared their own story of accidentally sending an incorrect email to 6,000 people! I was still embarrassed, but I felt a lot less lonely in the mistake. It was a great reminder that we are all human and not perfect. Since then, I have added some extra checks to my workflows, but I really appreciated the understanding and solidarity to relieve the stressful moment.

Anyone else ready to share a business (or life) oops that turned out better than you thought it would thanks to kindness of others?

My first classroom was filled with Barbies - anyone who would sit still long enough to be my student. My passion for helping others learn and succeed has never gone away. It looks different now, but it's still there.

Life has a way of redirecting our paths. 2020 brought intense challenges: my daughter's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis alongside the Covid shut down and my husband being a First Responder. I knew it was time to trust my intuition and make a change.

Now, I am an Online Business Manager which means I still get to be that helper and teacher. I'm just in a different classroom. I partner with business owners to streamline their systems, operations, and team management. Thank goodness I love to learn new things! The learning curve was steep (hello marketing, bookkeeping, and endless new software!), but the reward of supporting genuine people who value what I bring to their businesses makes it all worth it.

My younger self would be proud to see that I'm still helping others succeed. People ask if I missing teaching all the time. Truth is I don't. Between my volleyball-loving teenager and my super logical 9-year-old, I'm never far from those teaching moments I dreamed about as a kid.

Sometimes the best way to stay true to your calling is to change how you answer it. Are you living out your childhood dreams or have you taken a different path?

When I landed my first unknown client, I was terrified of being found out. After years of teaching children, I was intimidated by this new online world with flashy posts full of wins, promises, and money others were making. I considered crawling back to a classroom and hanging out with the middle schoolers again.

But here's the thing about change: when you stop trying to fit in with everyone else and show your genuine self, others are more drawn to you and more opportunities will come your way.

I landed one of my best clients by honestly responding to "Tell me something about you not on your resume."

I told him about how I'd stolen the rights to the best smoked pork butt in my family. My husband had recently purchased a Backwoods, so pool season was full of experimenting. When he was stuck at the fire station, I'd be tasked with starting the smoker and managing the pork butts and that's when my recipe became better than his.🏆

What I've learned is that your unique experiences and authentic self are exactly what make you valuable. And yes, I documented my procedures so I could do it again! 😉
