I am a member of the cybersecurity community, a concerned citizen, and I have come to the realization that unless we make a conscious effort to educate the American population as a whole on the fundamental concepts of cybersecurity and cyber literacy, we will be failing to serve our country effectively.
I suggest we assemble a group of highly skilled cybersecurity experts, computer scientists, ethical hackers, IT certification developers, and honest academia professionals to develop a comprehensive set of courses that can significantly enhance national cyber literacy. It is equally crucial that these courses be regularly updated, ideally every few years, to ensure their relevance and effectiveness in addressing emerging cyber trends.
It is my firm belief that these courses should be introduced as early as possible, ideally in middle school. I strongly advocate for making them mandatory for high school and even college graduation, similar to the requirement for Math, Science, and History. Cybersecurity fundamentals and cyber literacy have become of great importance for our nation’s security, and their inclusion in the curriculum is essential.
It is my conviction that implementing such a program is crucial for the long-term success and resilience of our nation. It offers numerous benefits, including elevating the nation’s baseline understanding of healthy cyber practices. This knowledge will enhance our nation’s resilience to cyber attacks and make us a more challenging target for malicious actors. Moreover, it has the potential to positively impact our economy. A workforce with a stronger foundation in cybersecurity basics will empower our hardworking Americans to contribute effectively, and allow their hard work remain in the country.
I deeply care for our country’s prosperity. I firmly believe that this initiative will not only bolster our economy but also fortify our cybersecurity workforce in terms of both quantity and quality. Moreover, it will contribute to the strengthening of our national security by making our nation a harder target as a whole. The primary objective is to safeguard not only our warfighters but also every citizen within this nation, as well as the sensitive data we carry. The frequency of data breaches and malware attacks is alarming, and many of these incidents stem from seemingly trivial sources rather than sophisticated attacks.
I urge anyone reading this to take a moment to look around. Observe the average number of data breaches over the past decade. Analyze the dollar value and the sheer volume of data that has been collected through these breaches. Finally, reflect on the advancements made by adversaries in both their technology and the economic gains they have achieved from stealing data from us as a nation. Ask yourself, is this historical trend healthy for our country? How long can we allow it to continue at this pace?
I am confident that we possess the capabilities to achieve anything we set our minds to. The conversation must be started to help secure us all.
Sincerely -
Weston Acey,
