That virus warning in your browser might be the scam.

If a website suddenly displays a warning telling you to call a support number immediately, don't call it.

Scammers use these messages to frighten people into giving them remote access to their computers.

Close the browser, avoid clicking the warning, and contact someone you trust if you're unsure.

PC Design helps Central Massachusetts customers with computer security and scam-related problems.

🚨 “MICROSOFT SAYS MY COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS!”

We get this call all the time — and thankfully, many times your computer isn’t actually infected.

One common culprit? Browser notifications.

You visit a website and it says:

👉 “Click ALLOW to continue”
👉 “Click ALLOW to prove you’re not a robot”
👉 “Click ALLOW to watch the video”

Once you click Allow, that website may be able to send notifications through Microsoft Edge or another browser.

Suddenly you start seeing:

⚠️ “Your computer is infected!”
⚠️ “Your McAfee subscription expired!”
⚠️ “5 viruses detected!”
⚠️ “Call Microsoft immediately!”

DON’T CLICK THEM.

If a random website asks permission to send you notifications and you don’t specifically want them, choose Block.

And if the warnings have already started, don’t panic. Close the browser and have the computer checked rather than clicking the warning or calling the phone number it provides.
