RAID is not a backup solution for your data
All companies that store their files on servers, store their data in what is called RAID, Redundant Array of Independent Disk.
But this should not be your back up plan. Yes, RAID is a solution to protect your data from hardware failure, and yes, every hard drive will fail and they fail more often than you might think.
There are several reasons why you shouldn’t rely on RAID as a backup solution for your data.
RAID will not protect your data from ransomware.
Ransomware is a form of malware that basically holds your files ransom by encrypting them and the attacker expects you to pay to get them un encrypted. For most cases this is a very effective means of an attack as to where most businesses don’t have proper backup and thus are at the mercy of the attacker to get their files back.
RAID will not protect your data from human error.
We are all human and we all make mistakes. There is nothing more gut wrenching then accidentally deleting a file and having no way to recover that file after it has been deleted or modified with RAID its just like one big disk and the file is instantly changed.
RAID will not protect your data from an onsite disaster.
Although RIAD is designed and meant for hardware redundancy a major onside disaster will more than likely destroy more disk than your RAID array can recover from. We all try our best to make good decisions on how we design our systems and protect them form the simple disasters like fire and floods but sometime mother nature has other plans for our onsite data storage.
RAID Redundancy does have its limitations.
The concept of RAID is built on redundancy. But redundancy does have its limitations in the way your data is stored. A good backup solution will store many copies of your data and will allow you to “roll back time” before the disaster happened.
For the amount time that I have spent in the IT field I have personally seen several times how companies have been able to recover from a data loss. Wither it was from ransomware attack or onsite disaster that has taken out their entire onsite storage its always nice to show up onsite and reassure our customers that we have a good back up and that all their data will be recovered and get them back up and running.
