Apparently may have a marketing positioning problem.

Marketing positioning is really about creating a link.

A link between your brand and a problem, an experience, or an idea you want people to associate with you.

I got a funny reminder of that recently while talking with my niece about the Wright brothers.

I live in southern Ohio, where we’re very aware that the Wright brothers were from Dayton and did much of their work here.

My niece grew up farther east, and they immediately said, “Aren’t they from North Carolina?”

Same history. Two very different associations depending on where you grew up.

North Carolina got the flight. Ohio got the Wright brothers.

Maybe North Carolina has just done a better job creating the association.

I have always liked “behind the scenes” jobs and companies — the people and technology doing incredible work that most of us never get to see. NEP Group, Inc. is no exception. They are the driving force behind some of the world’s biggest sporting events, award shows, and more.

I’ve had the opportunity to support the NEP team with their reporting and analytics, helping turn some of that behind-the-scenes data into insights for the business. It made it especially rewarding to visit in person and see more of the operation behind the numbers.

It was also great meeting more of the team in person in Pittsburgh (one person was much taller than expected!) and even getting to try the amazing Primanti Bros!

There’s always something valuable about getting out from behind the computer screen and spending time with the people you work with.

Thanks to everyone at NEP Group for the great visit!

Sales has one number. Finance has another.

How often are you actually comparing the two and digging into why they’re different?

I was doing exactly this for a client earlier this week, and it reminded me how common this challenge is.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but in this video I share 3 practical steps I’d start with to get the right people looking at the data and working toward a better revenue forecasting process.

How are you handling this in your organization?

Earlier this week, I made a choice to get out of my home office and visit some folks in the great Columbus, Ohio area.

We had some great conversations about the challenges that come with building and growing a business, how we’ve worked through them, and what we’re learning along the way.

I left with new ideas, new perspectives, new contacts, laughs, and some comfort that I am not alone in many of my experiences I face.

Get out of your comfort zone, connect with others, and see where a great conversation can lead.

Have you ever walked into a library and found an author's rough draft on the shelf instead of the finished version?

Probably not.

Libraries are designed so you can:
📚 Find the information you're looking for.
📚 Trust that it's accurate.
📚 Access only what you're supposed to.
📚 Know you're reading the final published version.

The same principles apply to your company's data.
In this Drums & Data episode, I use a simple library analogy to explain one of the most misunderstood topics in business analytics: data governance.

For decades, I thought I wore a size 12 shoe.

Then I took my son to buy new shoes.
For decades, I thought I wore a size 12 shoe.

Then I took my son to buy new shoes.

Turns out, I wasn't a size 12 after all!

I'm actually a size 13.

I've been buying the wrong size shoes for years because I never thought to recheck this after age 18

Coming from an embarrassed data guy, here's my advice:

Always check your numbers. Don't assume!

The same thing happens in business.

"Our marketing is doing amazing!"
"Our expenses are through the roof this month"
"We have never paid this much for coffee!"

Sometimes those assumptions are true.

Sometimes they're a size too small.

The only way to know is to measure.

That's what good data does—it replaces assumptions with facts.

Word to the wise: every once in a while, check your numbers. You might be surprised by what you discover.

RSTLNE.

If you know, you know.

After watching Wheel of Fortune the other night, I asked myself "why do I watch this when I could watch anything else?" and "why has this show been around for so long?"

PREDICTABILITY

People come back because it's predictable. And there is a comfort in this.

The format is always the same.
You know what you're going to get.

That made me think about business.

We spend a lot of time trying to stand out, but one of the most valuable things we can be is predictable.

Predictable service.
Predictable quality.
Predictable communication.
Predictable follow-through.

🥁 Drums & Data is back with Part 2 of my Microsoft Fabric series!

If Microsoft Fabric—and especially Fabric Capacity—feels like a LAND OF CONFUSION, this episode is for you.

In Part 2 of my Drums & Data, I cover:

🥁 What Fabric Capacity actually is
🥁 How Microsoft's pricing model has changed
🥁 Key Considerations when deciding how much capacity you need

One of the biggest shifts with Microsoft Fabric is that, instead of buying and managing separate computing resources for different analytics services, you purchase a shared pool of computing power that can be used across your analytics workloads.

My goal is to explain Microsoft Fabric in plain English (without much tech jargon) so business leaders can make more informed technology decisions.
