"I'm glad my wife isn't here!"

That was the first thing that came out of my mouth when it was my turn to introduce myself at a recent Springboro Chamber networking event hosted by Schmidt Auto Care.

I was amazed at the incredibly clean and organized shop and continued, "Our garage is NOT this clean!"

Fortunately, everyone laughed.

As I continued my introduction, I realized the cars in the back were actually a good visual aid for what I do.

They work on the dashboards in the cars you see behind me. I work on digital dashboards that help business leaders understand how their companies are performing.

Different kinds of dashboards, but both help you see what's going on and recognize when something needs attention and how things are going.

Thanks to Schmidt Auto Care and the Springboro Chamber for a fun networking event and a chance to see such an impressive facility!

Last week, I shared a post about splitting firewood and how it reminded me of public opinions on AI. Apparently, my firewood pile has more business lessons to teach me.

This weekend I was building the racks to hold the wood, and something stood out to me.

A block can be perfectly level **by itself**…
and still be wrong in relation to the other blocks.

One block can be a little too high.
Another a little too low.
And even though each one is right on its own, the full structure won’t sit correctly.

It made me think about working on a team.

Sometimes people are doing exactly what they’re supposed to be doing individually. But that doesn’t automatically mean the team is aligned.

That’s what is so challenging about leadership: sometimes everyone can be doing their part correctly, and the team can still be out of balance and miss the goal.

My grandpa taught me how to split wood with wedges and a sledgehammer.

You’d pound the wedge into the log until it finally split. Then do it again. And again. And, inevitably, you’d get a wedge stuck in the wood and have to figure out how to get the damn thing back out.

I spent hours doing it that way.

In fact, I don’t remember even knowing that log splitters existed. My grandpa didn’t use one, so neither did I.

Fast forward a few decades, and this weekend I was using a hydraulic log splitter.

As I stood there watching it do in seconds what used to take me several minutes, I started thinking about the parallels to AI.

I can imagine when the log splitter was invented that people talked about it the way we talk about AI today.

“It’s bad for the environment.”

“It’s loud and annoying to everyone around you.”

“The safety features are laughable and can easily be bypassed.”

“If people start using these things, eventually nobody will know how to split wood with an axe and wedges anymore.”

The technology may be different, but maybe the conversation isn’t.

We’ve just traded the wedges and sledgehammer for something else.

I am enjoying my first time attending the Startup Week From Launch Dayton

One of the talks I heard was from Andrew White, who creates engaging content for businesses and many others. He talked about being yourself, having fun, being authentic, and not being afraid to show some personality in your content.

It definitely resonated with me.

So maybe all these crazy videos I’ve been making throughout the years are actually a good idea. After all, a video I made 9 years ago launched my entrepreneurial journey 😂

Apparently may have a marketing positioning problem.

Marketing positioning is really about creating a link.

A link between your brand and a problem, an experience, or an idea you want people to associate with you.

I got a funny reminder of that recently while talking with my niece about the Wright brothers.

I live in southern Ohio, where we’re very aware that the Wright brothers were from Dayton and did much of their work here.

My niece grew up farther east, and they immediately said, “Aren’t they from North Carolina?”

Same history. Two very different associations depending on where you grew up.

North Carolina got the flight. Ohio got the Wright brothers.

Maybe North Carolina has just done a better job creating the association.

I have always liked “behind the scenes” jobs and companies — the people and technology doing incredible work that most of us never get to see. NEP Group, Inc. is no exception. They are the driving force behind some of the world’s biggest sporting events, award shows, and more.

I’ve had the opportunity to support the NEP team with their reporting and analytics, helping turn some of that behind-the-scenes data into insights for the business. It made it especially rewarding to visit in person and see more of the operation behind the numbers.

It was also great meeting more of the team in person in Pittsburgh (one person was much taller than expected!) and even getting to try the amazing Primanti Bros!

There’s always something valuable about getting out from behind the computer screen and spending time with the people you work with.
