Google’s AI is now calling local businesses on behalf of customers. Real phone calls — not chat, not forms.
Here’s how it works.
A button has appeared above local search results: “Have AI check prices.” The customer taps it and answers three quick questions — what service, how soon, where to send results. Under a minute of their time.
Then Google’s AI starts calling businesses in that category. It identifies itself as an automated system calling on behalf of a customer, asks about pricing and availability, and collects the answers. Roughly 30 minutes later the customer receives an email comparing everyone who responded.
So the decision now happens before anyone opens a website. No reviews read. No photos seen. No portfolio browsed.
And that email has a section called “Businesses we couldn’t reach.” That’s where a business lands when the phone rings out, or the front desk is mid-appointment, or someone assumes it’s a robocall. Listed with no price, directly beneath a competitor who answered.
This isn’t a Search Labs experiment anymore. Google confirmed it at I/O in May and it’s rolling out across the US this summer for beauty, home repair and pet care.
Ranking #1 used to be the finish line. Now it’s how a business gets onto the call list. What happens after that comes down to whether someone picks up, whether they can state a price in one sentence, and whether that price matches what’s published online.
