Yes, transparent solar panels have been developed in South Korea. In recent years, research teams in the country have made significant progress in creating fully transparent solar cells that can be integrated into windows, building facades, electronic device screens, and other surfaces without altering their appearance.

# # How do these invisible solar panels work?

- **Innovative materials**: These Korean panels use materials like titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and nickel oxide (NiO), which allow visible light to pass through while capturing energy from ultraviolet and part of the infrared spectrum to generate electricity. This gives them high optical transparency, making them almost indistinguishable from regular glass.
- **Advanced design**: Some prototypes feature a design with hidden electrical contacts on the back (all-back-contact, ABC), eliminating visible wires and enhancing both the aesthetics and transparency of the panel.
- **Architectural integration**: Thanks to their transparency, these panels can be installed in windows, facades, greenhouse roofs, and even mobile device screens, enabling energy generation without changing the design or functionality of spaces.

# # Efficiency and current status

- **Energy efficiency**: Early versions achieved energy conversion efficiencies around 2%, but recent developments have reached efficiencies close to those of conventional solar panels.
- **Prototypes and commercialization**: While many of these panels are still in the prototype phase, researchers are optimistic about a rapid transition to mass production due to high demand and the commercial potential of the technology.

# # Applications and potential

- **Solar windows**: The main anticipated application is integration into building and home windows, allowing large glass surfaces to generate electricity discreetly and efficiently.
- **Electronic devices**: They have also been successfully tested in mobile phone screens, enabling devices to charge directly through the display.
- **Vehicles and other uses**: Their transparency and versatility open the door to use in cars, urban furniture, and any glass surface exposed to sunlight.

Face ID utilizes Apple’s advanced TrueDepth camera system. This technology projects over 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the user’s face to build a precise depth map. By capturing and analyzing this data, Face ID constructs a unique mathematical model of each face, ensuring high accuracy and security in user authentication.

Data Location and Security

Security is at the core of Face ID’s design. All facial recognition data remains exclusively on the user’s device. This sensitive information is encrypted and stored within the Secure Enclave-a dedicated, separate chip embedded in the device. The Secure Enclave is isolated from the main operating system, meaning that neither iOS nor any app can directly access the raw facial data. This hardware separation is fundamental to preventing unauthorized access or data breaches.

Verification Process

The verification process is powered by on-device machine learning. When a user attempts to unlock their iPhone, the TrueDepth camera system captures a new facial scan and compares it to the securely stored template within the Secure Enclave. This comparison is performed entirely on the device, ensuring that biometric data never leaves the phone. The system is designed to adapt to subtle changes in appearance over time, maintaining both convenience and security.

Privacy Assurances

Apple is committed to user privacy. Face ID data is never transmitted to Apple servers, never backed up to iCloud, and never shared with third parties. All facial recognition information remains confined to the Secure Enclave, reinforcing our promise that users’ biometric data stays under their exclusive control.
