The Visual Mode

The Visual Mode As an architecture student, I needed a place to bring all my visual and design experiments together.

We provide several services to help clients get a better understanding of how software and other tools available to them play a role in the life and process of a designer. This is not just building a brand, but a community and platform for collaboration.

In our pursuit of great design, we often get ensnared in the allure of traditional methods.

There's a certain romanticism attached to the "old ways" of doing things.

But this exercise was a gentle reminder that innovation doesn't negate tradition; it builds upon it.

Adobe Illustrator, with its growing spectrum of tools, is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of design.

The 3D capabilities explored were not just an exercise in aesthetics but a journey of discovery.

It reinforced the idea that design tools, no matter how familiar, hold secrets waiting to be discovered.

As designers, our task is to continually seek, explore, and innovate, for in this quest lies the essence of true creativity.

You can read my full impression of the 3D tools in on the blog in the link in bio.

In the past two weeks of streams I showed a snippet of my workflow using Midjourney to quickly generate a conceptual design in 3d.

Granted, a real project requires much more research and due diligence. However, these design sprints are substantially helping me develop a style of my own.

I’ve always been more technical and production focused, I just follow the brand guide. If I had to design something from scratch I pull myself in a dozen directions and land nowhere. It’s why working off an AI reference image is so fun for me.

It sets off an intention in my head, and when I try to copy the reference I end up somewhere entirely my own.

It’s really interesting and exciting to start having moments in which I finish some creative work and when I ask myself “Is it good enough?”

I answer: “I don’t care. I like it.”

Do what we did in school. Revert to the programming."

This was my friend's advice.

About 6 months into my full-time design career, I had a project assigned all to myself. It was a beefy scope and allowed me to fully invest in getting it right. So, why was I freaking out?

The majority of my time leading up to this had been spent on learning about the business and breaking away from the "intern" status. Did business knowledge replace design experience?

I called a friend who runs his design agency and confessed that for some reason, I was overwhelmed and drawing a blank at the opportunity to do the work I love. Work I had done over and over again in the past.

I could spend all day talking about the things I learned at University that were useless. However, upon hearing my friend's obvious and basic advice, I was having flashbacks of mood boards.

I was looking for some grandiose answer, already concerned that the client wouldn't love my proposal and that I needed to crack the code for the perfect solution that would solve all their problems.

In reality, I just needed to do what successful designers and art students do every day. Reflect on what inspires me, and create something through my own lens.

Why hadn't we built mood boards at work? I work with senior designers, how come we haven't mentioned or valued an activity that is so fundamental for creatives?

You see, I was mostly looking for external validation for my work. Even though some architects insist they are artists, we disrespect our processes in favor of doing "what the client wants."

I put less weight into

"How do I give the client what they want to see?"

and more weight into

"What do I need to do to come up with the best solution?"

What do you hold as valuable from your formal education?

Awesome landscape design for a new development in South Florida coming up!

Actually, no, it isn’t. This image was made with Leonardi.AI

- When we talk about AI tools, the majority of them are not actually “Intelligent.”

- They employ machine learning, meaning there is a process leading to an answer and improves on itself as it is fed more data.

- With Leonardo, I was able to create my own data set from all the plans I’ve created in the past.

- I then fed it linework of a random location, and prompted it to give a “High quality Landscape design site plan.”

I did a livestream yesterday in which I reviewed their new iOS app which launched this past Monday.

In that video I go into detail what I think the current use cases are for these tools.

Link is in my bio if you’d like to understand this process for yourself.

Happy Hump Day!

I often think about how I would have done school differently if I knew then what I know now. Here’s some key points I’d consider if you’re currently in school.

If you’re not, what’s your take?

It’s been about 18 months since my first AI generated image. In January of 2022, there were only a handful of AI tools out there, mostly withh the prompt to image. Now, not only is my workflow entirely different from what it was back then, but it evolves every month. These past couple of months, I’ve used AI tools in my work more often than the Adobe Suite. In fact, Blender and Adobe only become involved at the final stages.

For those still hesitant in adopting these tools, I’d keep in mind it’s not the technology that should intimidate you. It’s the fact that one person with a few years’ experience in these tools will be able to replace your entire team.

So for a , let’s take a moment to go outside, take a deep breathe, and say goodbye to the past. Make a plan for growing today, tomorrow, and every day after that.

Adaptability has shot up to the top of essential skills.

Something that’s been working incredibly well this year I’m doubling down on: face to face conversations with designers and directors.

What shows up on people’s social media or website is a “one sheeter.” The true value in people’s work, the current needs creatives can satisfy is best understood through genuine interest in others.

There’s no better data than what gets people excited to talk about their wins and losses.
