I’m writing to warn you about a nasty new virus called Cryptolocker. It has been wreaking havoc on clients and encrypting documents using a new attack vector and RSA encryption algorithm.
Cryptolocker can sneak in even with a real-time anti-virus protection and once it’s on a computer, it will encrypt and make documents inaccessible unless you pay a ransom. Most infections happen when a user opens a pdf attached to an email so the threat is very high and the damage can have a severe impact on your business. If Cryptolocker is removed, chances of recovering encrypted files are slim to none.
For our fully managed clients, we are tightening up security policy to prevent Cryptolocker from being able to install and damage but some applications may be affected. If any of your software is affected by these Group Policy changes please contact us se we can allow the “good” software. As always, make sure you save your important data on the network and not only on your computer.
For unmanaged clients please contact us to have these preventative measure put in place. Shadow copies should be enabled as well as a robust data backup solution.
We don’t typically email you when a new virus comes out but this one is a game changer as the damage is irreversible.
As always, make sure your documents are fully backed up and accessible and feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or 305-517-1000 to make certain that you are fully protected.
