Our 2021 Somerset County Fair wraps up today! This old photograph of the county fairgrounds can be found in The New Republic's 1999 "A Town Remembered" publication. It is estimated the photo was taken prior to 1912, as the Salisbury Viaduct is not present in its background.

Back in 1910 - as reported in the Meyersdale Republican on the 29th of September that autumn - "A CLEAN FAIR" was demanded and promised.

At 2 o'clock in the afternoon 110 years ago today - June 10th, 1911 - the crane working from the top of the Salisbury Viaduct as it was being constructed toppled to the ground, killing five men instantly. A sixth worker died the following evening at the Markleton Sanatorium. This picture, captured by Meyersdale photographer E.E. Conrad, was published in that week's issue of the Meyersdale Republican newspaper.

These advertisers were among those who supported the Meyersdale High School Class of 1937 in its "Hi-Point" yearbook. Front and center was our community's newspaper, still in existence all these years later as The New Republic! Keep an eye on our Meyersdale Public Library's page in coming weeks for additional reflections of the businesses located here in our community at that point in time.
