Do you own your domain? https://yatmedia.com/do-you-own-your-domain/ It’s important that you own your domain.
Own your domain
“I’ll take care of all that for you,” is something you hear from web developers soliciting your business. It’s not a bad idea. To work, this requires a trust relationship between customer and developer. Once that’s established, sure, let them get to work. Domains present complications in the long run.
Think of your domain as the lot you bought and built a house on. You’re likely not going to build the house yourself. A general contractor brings the skilled workers together and the house goes up. It goes up on your lot. Even if something goes wrong in the owner-builder relationship. The lot underfoot belongs to the owner. Businesses need the same structure when starting on the web. So, go buy the lot first.
Purchasing a domain
While we usually talk about “owning,” it’s more of a lease than outright ownership. The business chooses a name, then goes to a “domain registrar,” a company in the business of registering domains and maintaining their connection to the internet. Be sure to choose a registrar that’s accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Here at YatMedia, we prefer Joker.com, a Swiss registrar. Their front-end is easy to use, even if you’re new to all this. We like Joker because they’re not in the web hosting or website development businesses. While it seems like an extra step/entity in the process, keeping your domain separate from the hosting company can be helpful down the line.
So, think about the name for your domain. Go to Joker.com and register it. Set yourself up as a Joker user. This is important–no matter who you go with to build your website, you now own the base. Get stuck during the process? We’ll be glad to help.
Check it off!
You own your domain. Now you can build or renovate with confidence.
