Product Opinion: New eero Signal
eero has released the eero Signal for for $99.99 for LTE and 199.99 for 5G. What does that mean? eero now has a backup cellular device that connects you to the internet when your primary internet service goes down.
So, you have an eero system and live in SE Louisiana, wow, this will be great for hurricane season. NOT SO FAST!
As an eero certified dealer and installer, I am here to warn you of what will happen during an outage from a storm.
1. It does not work unless you have electricity. Yes, it works if you have a generator or a large backup battery like a UDPOWER S2400 Portable Power Station but pay attention to number 2.
2. If a storm hits and you have electricity but no internet, you will be faced with jammed cell towers. The cell towers will be flooded well past capacity and the internet will be so slow that it will be unusable except for texting. The cellular providers do not offer any prioritization of service unless you are on the first responder network, also known as FirstNet, which is a special network only for credentialed first responders.
3. eero Signal requires an active eero Plus subscription to provide cellular backup, costing $99.99 per year (or $9.99/month) for the standard plan. This subscription provides 10 GB of data per year. Yes, per year. A higher tier, eero Plus 100, is available for $199.99 per year, offering 100 GB of data per month. 10 GB will last most people 2hrs. 100 gb may last a day, 2 if you are careful and have no kids.
So, good for the casual internet outage? Yes, as long as you have the top plan. I would say this is a great product for times when you need internet for the most critical of connections and are patient but not for casual surfing, streaming TV or Netflix and definably not for gaming.
My suggestion for SE Louisiana residents, install a generator and get Fiber. That will be your best bet provided a tree doesn't take out the aerially run fiber line.
Please note: this is not an attempt to bash eero. eero is a fantastic product. I sell and install eero for customers weekly. This is an attempt to make folks in our area understand the reality of this product in a very specific situation.
