Are you still managing separate suppliers for the design, mechanical and electrical components of your system?

Over the past ten years, medical technology has advanced significantly.

As these products have become more complex, the way OEMs work with manufacturing partners has changed. In the past, many OEMs worked with one partner for mechanical work and another for electrical work. Today, more OEMs are looking for a turnkey solution, because their contract manufacturer needs to understand how the entire system works together.

At GMI Solutions, we have focused on building that understanding. This is clearly evident in how we approach testing. We test in conditions that are as close to real-world use as possible, which requires a deep understanding of the mechanical and electrical design, the components, and how they interact.

We will continue to grow in this direction, because this is where the industry is heading.

Is one part in your BOM about to delay your launch?

At the start of every project, one of the first things we review is the supply chain.
Some projects use customer-directed suppliers. Others require new suppliers or tighter tolerances that push our existing supply chain. Either way, we begin with a supply chain risk review of the customer's bill of materials (BOM) to find the issues we need to address early.

That review helps us identify components that may reach end of life before launch, parts with long lead times that could slow the project down, and components we'll need to negotiate for with suppliers.

Recent years have shown how quickly supply chains can change, from COVID to current challenges in the electronics market. Reviewing the BOM early lets us give customers honest feedback, set realistic timelines, and plan for each milestone through launch and into production.

Who supports your medical device after you stop making it?

This is one of the most common questions we receive from medical OEMs, particularly larger organizations with a significant installed base.

Ending production does not end the need for support. Devices already in the field must continue to perform, and that responsibility remains with the OEM.

At GMI Solutions, we have dedicated processes and a team that manages this installed base on behalf of our medical OEM customers. This includes evaluating part substitutions to determine whether a change could affect the product's FDA file.

By taking on this work, we allow our customers' engineering teams to focus on higher-value priorities, such as developing the next generation of their products. Most importantly, the people who rely on these devices in the field can continue to use them with confidence.

Is your project's biggest risk sitting in someone else's timeline?

Our work is often one part of a larger initiative, so we need to understand how other projects connect to ours. Their schedules can affect our deliverables, and our deliverables can affect their timelines.
When we have a full picture of the project from the start, we can identify risks sooner and work out solutions before they affect cost or schedule.

How early does your team bring partners into the planning process?

There are make-vs-buy decisions inside your make-vs-buy decision.

An OEM may decide to outsource a control cabinet and buy it as one part number. But underneath that part number, the manufacturing partner is still making make-vs-buy decisions at every level.

One cabinet we build has roughly 2,200 line items in the base BOM.
For a time, we made every point-to-point wire in-house: multiple lengths, labels on each end, each wire handled individually.
Then we questioned whether that work belonged inside our operation.
Stripping and labeling individual wires weren't a core competency. Building and testing complete cable assemblies was.
So, we moved the wire work to a cable manufacturer. The wires now arrive as a labeled kit, at a lower cost.

Dozens of SKUs became one.

That's an important part of outsourcing that can be easy to overlook.
The question isn't only whether a manufacturing partner can build your product.
It's whether they'll keep finding better ways to build it after you've stopped having to.

For surgical carts, we consider IEC 60601 risks early in the NPI process.

Test failures can drive redesign, rework, and delays.
The goal is simple: identify risks before they become launch problems.

That is part of Manufacturing What Matters.

Ask a contract manufacturer whose supply base you'll be using. The answer tells you a lot.

Ours is: yours, ours, or both.

Thirty years of building for large OEMs means large OEMs directed us to their qualified suppliers, and we kept those relationships. We didn't build that base alone. We inherited much of it.

But flexibility is only half of it. The half that matters more is ownership. Whether a supplier came from your AVL or ours, GMI manages quality, delivery, and pricing. If there's an issue at a customer-directed supplier, our quality team is the one on site.
