Apple just made a much more serious move into the smart-home space.
The new Apple HomeView is a wall-mount or tabletop screen for your home. Think cameras, lights, locks, thermostats, music, FaceTime, and a better Siri interface in one place. Apple also announced a new Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini 2, and Apple Home cameras, doorbells, locks, thermostats, and sensors.
The good part: this could make an Apple-first home much simpler. A HomeView in the kitchen or entry can show the front-door camera, run a Goodnight scene, adjust the thermostat, or give you a quick way to check the house. The new Apple TV 4K can also act as a stronger home hub, show doorbell alerts on the television, and support hands-free Siri.
There are a few things to keep in mind.
Apple Home works best when the home is planned around compatible Matter, Thread, and Apple Home devices. Not every existing camera, lock, thermostat, TV, or smart-home gadget will suddenly work the same way. Some of the newer AI camera features also depend on eligible iCloud+ storage and compatible Apple devices. And for a larger home with serious AV, shading, security, and mixed brands, Apple may be one part of the system rather than the whole system.
That is where we come in.
