🚨 Hackers claim attack on city of McMinnville 🚨

Alexonet first became aware of reports of this incident on August 6 through industry threat intelligence sources we routinely monitor.
Public reporting now indicates that the ransomware group RansomHouse is claiming responsibility for the attack and threatening to release sensitive information if demands are not met.
This serves as a reminder that every organization should be reviewing its cybersecurity posture, backups, MFA protections, patching practices, and employee security awareness training.

Several cyber threat monitoring websites are reporting the city of McMinnville was the victim of a ransomware attack last month; however, city officials are remaining ...

Follow up from Friday's Post:

A local city recently became the victim of a ransomware attack believed to be associated with the RansomHouse cybercriminal group. The incident serves as another reminder that municipalities and public agencies continue to be attractive targets for cyber extortion operations. The ransom note associated with the incident claims network compromise, data theft, and encrypted systems.
As part of our review, Alexonet located what appeared to be proof-of-data samples posted by the threat actor. This is a common tactic used by ransomware and data extortion groups to demonstrate that they have successfully obtained information and are capable of releasing it publicly if their demands are not met. In this case, the exposed samples appeared to include municipal operational information, financial records, insurance documents, personnel information, and other business records.
Unlike traditional ransomware groups that focus solely on encrypting systems, groups such as RansomHouse are known for leveraging data theft and the threat of public disclosure as additional pressure points during negotiations. The goal is often to create operational, financial, legal, and reputational consequences for the victim organization.
This incident reinforces several cybersecurity fundamentals that every organization should be reviewing:
✅ Multi-factor authentication (MFA) across all systems
✅ Segregated and routinely tested backups
✅ Security awareness training for all staff
✅ Continuous vulnerability management and monitoring
✅ Tested incident response and disaster recovery plans
✅ Regular review of cyber insurance coverage and response procedures
Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue. It is a business continuity, financial, operational, and public trust issue.
At Alexonet, we encourage organizations to use incidents like this as an opportunity to evaluate their own security posture before they become the next target.
Please share this with your staff and leadership teams. Awareness remains one of the most effective cybersecurity controls available.

🚨 Cybersecurity Awareness Reminder

Recent reports indicate that a local municipal organization may be responding to a cybersecurity incident. While official details have not yet been released, it's a good reminder that cyber threats can impact organizations of any size.

Alexonet recommends taking a few simple precautions:

✅ Be cautious with unexpected emails, links, attachments, and file-sharing requests.
✅ Verify payment requests, banking changes, and sensitive requests through a second communication method.
✅ Ensure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled wherever possible.
✅ Report unusual login prompts, password resets, or suspicious account activity immediately.
✅ Confirm critical systems and backups are functioning normally.
✅ Investigate unexpected account lockouts, suspicious emails, or unusual network activity.

Please share this reminder with your staff. Employees are often the first line of defense against phishing, credential theft, and social engineering attacks.

At this time, there is no indication that any of our clients have been impacted. This post is intended as a proactive reminder to remain vigilant and follow cybersecurity best practices.
