McKENZIE — Imagine standing beneath a golden temple, sharing stories with Japanese university students, sipping matcha during a centuries-old tea ceremony, or seeing the world’s largest city beneath you from hundreds of feet in the air.

For a group of Bethel University Global Studies students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, that wasn’t a dream. It was their classroom.

🏡 KIDS' DAY — Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County, TN invited children to put their gardening skills to the test during Kids’ Day on Friday, June 19.

Children of various ages showed up at 871 Walnut Avenue West, McKenzie, helping landscape JayAnn Johnson’s new home.

Habitat for Humanity provided flowers, dirt, flower pots and spades for all participating volunteers.

Young volunteers included Norah Milam, Skyler Milam, Reed Stewart, Lillie Atkinson and Kaiden Wallace.

Habitat for Humanity broke ground on Johnson’s new home in mid-March. Now, her home appears almost complete, with construction primarily taking place inside the house.

Johnson, a longtime McKenzie resident and four-year volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, has named her home “God’s Glory.”

“This is a blessing from the Lord,” she said. “There is nothing I did to deserve this. This is all God who has done this.”

Johnson said she visits the house nearly every day — sometimes driving by after work and sometimes stopping to walk around the property. As of Friday, Johnson was not sure when the home would be move-in ready.

“This is a dream come true,” Johnson said. “Words cannot express it. I am truly thankful."

🏀 NELSON SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMPS — For just over two decades, Bethel University Lady Wildcat Basketball Head Coach Chris Nelson has spent part of each summer cultivating young players with help from his players and staff in a series of three-day camps.

The Chris Nelson Summer Basketball Camps began in early June with team camps, where entire teams spent three days playing a total of 281 games at six area gymnasiums: Bethel University’s Crisp Arena and Baker Fieldhouse, McKenzie High School, McKenzie Middle School and the two gyms at Gleason School.

The individual camp began June 15 and continued through Wednesday, June 17 at Crisp and Baker.

Coach Jeff Britt's basketball camps began this week at Bethel University.
