In the world of tires, Firestone is a reputable and popular brand; but in the heart of Beverly, the name is further distinguished by the name Skinner.
Since 1960, Skinner Firestone, Inc. has operated as a local staple for tire needs. The story of the shop is less about rubber and tread, and more about the ever-growing legacy that this local family has built from the ground up. Today, it stands as a rare, three-generation success story, proving that even over a span of more than six decades, a family’s core values can remain as solid as their concrete shop floor.

In 2016, the Democratic candidate for president mocked a portion of her opponent’s supporters as “deplorables.” It was a mistake. The Republicans pounced by leaning into the mock. Her opponent’s supporters adopted the slur and began calling themselves deplorables. It was all done to draw a distinction between Hillary Clinton, who Republicans portrayed as a representative of the east coast elite and her competitor Donald Trump, who they portrayed as a fighter for middle America. By referring to rural blue-collar voters as deplorables, Mrs. Clinton, who was from Arkansas, allowed Mr. Trump, who was a New York City billionaire, to become the hero of the working class.
History may not repeat but it certainly rhymes.

The 10th Annual Paddle for Heroes – 2026 Memorial Paddle, 160-mile paddle from Mount Vernon to Marietta, will take place from Sunday, June 7, to Friday, June 12.

According to its organizers for this year’s Heroes event, they are honored to dedicate this journey to 1st Lieutenant Charles L. Wilkins of Columbus and PFC Ryan A. Martin of Mount Vernon, Ohio – both killed in action on August 20, 2004, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On August 20, 2004, with temperatures climbing above 95 degrees, soldiers of A Company, 216th Engineer Battalion from Chillicothe, Ohio, were concluding a long day of route-clearance operations. Operating in the notoriously dangerous region of Samarra – often referred to as the “hot entry point to Fallujah” – their mission was abruptly cut short. A sudden blast struck the convoy’s lead Humvee, claiming the lives of two dedicated soldiers: 1LT Charles Wilkins and PFC Ryan Martin.
