June 6, 1944: "Into the Jaws of Death"

At 7:40 a.m. local time, U.S. Coast Guard Chief Photographer's Mate Robert F. Sargent raised his camera. What he captured—troops of the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) wading through waist-deep water toward Omaha Beach under German fire—became one of the defining images of World War II.

The photograph is titled "Into the Jaws of Death." Also known as "Taxis to Hell—and Back."

It's the raw reality of D-Day.

The Photograph:
→ Taken: June 6, 1944, 7:40 a.m. local time
→ Location: Omaha Beach, Easy Red sector
→ Subjects: E Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, U.S. 1st Infantry Division
→ Photographer: Chief Photographer's Mate Robert F. Sargent, U.S. Coast Guard
→ Context: Soldiers disembarking from an LCVP (Higgins boat) from USS Samuel Chase

A Historical Note:
This photograph is often credited to Robert Capa, the famous Life magazine photographer who also documented D-Day. But "Into the Jaws of Death" was taken by Coast Guard photographer Robert F. Sargent, shot from his landing craft. Both photographers captured the chaos and courage of Omaha Beach that day—from different perspectives.

The Numbers:
By nightfall on June 6: 4,400+ Allied casualties
By month's end: 850,000 troops ashore
Entire Normandy campaign: 209,000+ Allied casualties, 400,000+ German, 200,000+ French civilian

One photograph. One moment. The beginning of the liberation of Western Europe.

We remember.
