Welcome to the Wide Area Network Repeater System

W3WAN wanrs.com

The WAN Repeater System is managed by a team of ten 'core' members. The first hams to experiment locally with this technology were Scott Zimmerman - N3XCC and Dave Hunter - N3YFO who are responsible for sparking the interest, and tying the first few repeaters together in Cambria and Somerset Counties (PA) In July of 2010. Kevin

Custer - W3KKC added a two of his repeaters to the unnamed system in Somerset and Warren Counties in August of 2010. In November 2010, Tom Brew - K3WS added his Carrolltown repeater, as well as a DC node at his remote residence to the system. November also brought Brian Burton - KB3ORS into the core group as director of systems support. In December 2010 Kevin Custer thought up the name Wide Area Network Repeater System which was adopted as the official name. Within days, Tom Brew K3WS established our web presence. February 2011 was a busy month! Our dedicated Hub node in Warren received the 'vanity' number 2135. Jim Knox - N5NWC and Kevin Custer added the Punxsutawney repeater to the system. We also added the Blue K**b repeater in association with core member Jeff Blake - N8PSU. We wrapped up the month welcoming in core member Jeff DePolo - WN3A and his Philly Hub and high profile UHF repeater. Jeff DePolo is also responsible for forming the amateur radio club W3WAN. In July of 2011 we welcomed our ninth core member Dave Chubski - KB3UAG owner of the St. Thomas site. Our tenth member Elaine Bailey - K3EMM provides our Internat Fiber Optic Service to 2135 as well a many other support roles. We must say that all of this wouldn't be possible without the effort and cooperation of Steve Henke - W9SH, as most of our servers are using the Zipper release which you can read about below. So, in short, the "WAN-RS" is an amateur radio partnership (club) formed to promote repeater linking using VoIP (RoIP) to connect multiple repeater sites together for emergency operations, and just for fun. Based in Pennsylvania, we cover a large portion of the state, and along with 'affiliate' nodes, we cover a whole lot more. Please take the time to explore http://www.wanrepeater.net and see what's happening.

How to Solder

To All: You are invited to ICARC's Last Saturday Event for this month.

Title of Event: How to Solder

Location: ICARC's Remote/Repeater site on the left side of Rhine Rd, approximately ½ mile South of Luciusboro Rd.
GPS Coordinates: 40.49833, -79.13374
Club members planning to attend please try to be there at 10:00AM to help set up.

All equipment, supplies and parts will be provided by ICARC (If you prefer your own equipment like a soldering iron you may bring it but not required.)

Also, there is a good chance that picnic type food will be available, water will definitely be available. Please feel free to bring food/snacks you would like to share.

Description of the Event.
Those of you who attended the April Meeting of ICARC know about it but others may not. Most of you may already know that, for the Final or "Last" Saturday of each month, ICARC puts on a special event, of some sort, related to ham radio that is open to all. For April, Saturday the 26th is the day and the event will be a Soldering Class (sort of). Those who attend will have the opportunity to either learn to Solder for the first time or perhaps practice their existing Soldering skills. This skill is a "Must" for most hams and very useful to other electronics enthusiasts. Therefore, this will be a golden opportunity to hone your existing skill or perhaps learn something new; certainly a new educational opportunity. This will be done by having participants actually solder PL259 uhf connectors to RG8X coaxial cables that will be used at ICARC events such as Field Day (Summer & Winter) as well as the Pennsylvania QSO Party and others. In addition there are plans to have participants to fabricate a J-pole antenna for 2m (vhf) from parallel wire feed line material. The nice thing about this antenna is that it is fold-able and very compact; easy to carry into remote biking or hiking areas. It is easy to hang from a tree with twine and is ideal for "Low Power" (QRP) and portable operations. It is great for "Parks On The Air" or any remote event.

COME ONE COME ALL! We look forward to seeing you.
