We have really come a long way since then. But this was a huge step. Before this we used paper or magnetic tape, but access to data was sequential. What that means is that if the drive was at the beginning of the tape and the data that you needed was at the end, it had to read through everything on the tape to get to what you needed. Disc drives introduced random access so that for the first time you could access the data that you need directly without having to read through everything else. This greatly improved speed. The next big advance storage came in 1991 with the modern solid state drive. While these are now the standard on new computers, I still regularly see computers using hard drives which utilize these older style spinning disks. Solid state drives, because they have no moving parts, have two big advantages including faster speed and longer life. If you have a computer which uses a hard drive, give me a call or text at 434-241-0270 or message me here. I can upgrade you to a much faster solid state drive, and can keep all of your settings and programs and data exactly like they are, but much faster.
