Marketing, as all communications, is far more effective when you present your message in a way that captures attention. If not, it will fall into the "Blah, blah, blah" bucket.

Tom McElligott, a marketing Giant, said, "if your company is reviewing your potential new ad and everyone's palms aren't sweating, it's probably no good!".

Falling in line with your competitors way of communicating will only result in your company being another one of the sheep. Don't be afraid to stand out. That's what it's all about.

Call me. I'll help you do it.

I've made this point in a number of ways, but it's so important I'll make it again.

Communicating with clarity the value of what you are offering compared to your competitors is by far more powerful and convincing than being cute or clever. Haven't you seen so many clever ad campaigns that you remember for their fun creativity but don't remember the company or their value proposition!

Always make sure your viewers come away with 'who you are, what you've go and why it's important'

To try to give examples for how many ways the 'Just the tip of the Iceberg' phrase is used would produce, well, Just the Tip of the Iceberg of existing examples! OK, cheap joke. But it's true. Put the phrase in Bing and look at images. You'll see, well, you know. It's used about countless marketing and branding insights, data discovery rules, quotes and on and on.

The point is always that just as with an iceberg, the part you see' above the water' is merely a tenth of what exists under the water holding up that visible tip. Ok, it's a cool idea to work with. And though it can be applied in gazillions of specific cases both real and abstract, I think the most powerful thing to take away is:

When thinking through and evaluating anything, always look deeper than what seems obvious. This is especially true when doing marketing. It is the companies that dive deep and really work the issues that find the jewels that make their marketing succeed.

If you want me to help you look beneath your present marketing approach to discover what may bring you greater success, just ask. I will give my first impressions for free. Then we can go further if you want.

Yup, this is what Social Media, Yelp (Who I hate), Twitter, and all the other new channels are all about. But as in all things, there is a dangerous side to the information provided in this way. IT CAN'T BE TRUSTED. All information has to be evaluated on it's truth and merits. For example, if you go online and social media channels to get health advice you are definitely in no man's land. Sadly, I can't bring clarity here. And that is sad. We are inundated with baloney. Just be careful.

I make my living helping companies focus their message and create compelling marketing that increases sales. I'm very good at it, and if you need help to take your offering to a next level, please get in touch.

But I'm here to say that the most important thing I can pass on to improve sales is to make your product better and more affordable. That's it. You'll do well if you make something people really want, that it does what you say it will do, that it has integrity and lasts and that it sells at a price that makes sense for it's value. Get that right and you're poised to win.

Collaboration is the new big deal right? True, sometimes collaboration is a powerful thing. But let's step back. It's not the magical process you might think. I'm sure you all know what the lowest common denominator is. That's often the result in collaboration. People reach a watered down compromise to appease each other.

Would you want a big group to write a song, or let a great artist you love write one. Often it is profoundly more powerful to hire a great talent and let them do the job. Fine, tune it if you want, but let the tested integrating brain do the work that a group can't do. If you think about it, great work is never done by a committee. Sorry, not goo goo, but true. As Ogilvy said, "Don't hire a dog and bark yourself"

We are inundated with marketing data these days. Some of it accurate, some not. Some of it gathered without bias, some with filtering and selective choices to support a predetermined goal.

If you want to do effective marketing, it does no good to use inaccurate or biased data. But even then, you must be able to organize and evaluate the data in an insightful way to come to useful conclusions. Not an easy task.

But if you are rigorous to ask the right questions and get good data and then work to understand it and organize it in the best way, you may end up with a helpful vision that can guide your marketing.

The most powerful marketing you can do will not save a product that people don't want. So doing the research to make sure you design your product to be what people DO WANT is key. But the real magic happens when you make something that anticipates what people will want, even though they don't know it yet!

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. -Charles Darwin

This is true for your business too! With so much data and so many ways to communicate with your customers, you've got to pay attention and adjust to what your customers want and how they want it. Those who do will thrive. The others, not so much.
