Your social media accounts are part of your business. They deserve the same attention as the rest of your IT.

If someone gets into your Facebook or Instagram account, they can post as your business, message your customers, or lock you out entirely.

A few simple steps can make a big difference:

• Turn on two-factor authentication for every business account
• Give each person their own access instead of sharing one password
• Regularly review who has access and remove former employees
• Secure the personal admin accounts connected to your business pages too

The goal isn’t to make social media more complicated. It’s to make sure the people representing your business are the only ones who can access it.

You focus on running your business. We’ll help you keep the technology behind it simple and secure.

Your team needs Wi-Fi. Your guests do too. But they don’t all need access to the same network.

Everything on one network can talk to everything else on it. So a guest's malware-infected laptop, or a cheap smart camera with a known flaw, sits on the same network as the computer running your accounts. If an attacker gets into the weak device, your business machines are right there next to it.

The fix is to separate your network:

• Keep guests on a dedicated Guest Wi-Fi
• Put smart devices like cameras, TVs, and thermostats on their own network
• Keep work computers and servers separate from both

You should be able to give people and devices the access they need without giving them access to everything else.

And you shouldn’t have to figure that out on your own. We can help you understand how your network is set up and make sure the right devices are in the right place.

Not sure what’s sharing your network? Ask us.

Keep IT simple. Keep IT secure.

That slow laptop your employee is using is costing you more than a new one ever would.

It is easy to look at a computer as a tool you only replace when it finally breaks. As long as it turns on, a new machine often feels like an unnecessary expense. But it is worth considering what that patience is actually costing your business.

Think about the daily drag. Every slow startup, every minute spent waiting for a file to open, and every frozen call that forces a team member to drop and rejoin creates a quiet drain on your productivity. When you add those minutes up across a year, the cost often exceeds the price of a modern machine.

Beyond the lost time, there is the frustration that wears on your people, plus the reality that older machines eventually stop receiving security updates. An old computer is rarely just slow; eventually, it becomes a liability.

You do not have to replace everything at once, but it is worth getting ahead of the curve. Check in with your team to see which machines are driving them mad, and reach out to your IT provider to identify which ones are near the end of their lifecycle. A smart investment in the right tools helps your team stay fast, secure, and focused on the work that actually moves your business forward.

You got ransomware and your files are locked. Now what? Do you pay or not?

Before you send a cent, keep in mind that paying the hackers doesn't guarantee you'll get your files back. And in some cases, paying them can even break the law.

So start with your backups. Check that they're working and that you can restore your systems yourself. If you can, you might not need to pay at all.

Sort this out with your IT provider before it ever happens, not in the middle of an attack.

This week, we’re excited to put the spotlight on Vincent Warner, one of our Support Technicians! 🌟

Vincent is often one of the first people our customers interact with when they need technical support, and he brings a level of reliability that his team has come to count on. When something is handed off to Vincent, we know it will be handled quickly, thoughtfully, and with the customer in good hands.

That same dependability shows up within our team, too. Vincent is always willing to jump in and help a coworker, even when he already has plenty on his plate. He consistently reflects CisCom’s core values through the way he works, supports others, and shows up for our customers every day.

When asked if there was anything that stands out to him since working at CisCom, he shared:

“I feel incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to work here. Every day I am given the opportunity to learn from coworkers and while I'm working. It truly feels as if everyone here is trying their best to support one another and make themselves/CisCom a good place to work.”

We’re so grateful to have Vincent on our team and can’t wait to see the continued impact he makes here at CisCom. Thank you, Vincent!

Microsoft has started installing Copilot on business computers automatically. Before your team starts using it, it's worth getting your files in order.

Copilot can only see the files a user already has permission to access. The problem is that, in most businesses, that's often a lot more than it should be.

Files get shared with "Everyone" for convenience. Project folders get opened up and never locked back down. Permissions pile up over the years because no one has a reason to go looking through old files.
Until now.

With Copilot, employees don't have to search for information anymore. They simply ask a question, and Copilot can answer using anything they're allowed to see, including files that may have been shared with the entire company by mistake.

The good news is this is easy to get ahead of. Before your team starts relying on Copilot, review your file permissions, starting with HR and finance. Make sure employees only have access to the information they need to do their jobs.

A little housekeeping today can help you use AI with confidence tomorrow.

The once-a-year security training most businesses run does almost nothing, because people forget it within weeks and the threats keep changing.

Training works when it's small, frequent, and tied to real examples.

A 5-minute reminder once a month sticks far better than a 60-minute session once a year. And it lands harder when it uses the scams hitting businesses, like the fake "paste this command" prompts or the AI voice calls impersonating the boss.

Good training also makes it safe to report mistakes. If an employee clicks something and worries they'll get in trouble, they'll keep it to themselves, and that silence is how a small problem becomes a breach. Tell your team plainly that reporting a click the moment it happens means no blame.

That's how you catch most attacks early. You don't have to build this yourself. Ask your IT provider what ongoing awareness training they offer, and whether it includes short, regular refreshers and simulated phishing tests. If your current setup is one slideshow a year, that's the thing to fix.

Someone calls your IT support and says they're an employee who's locked out of their account. They sound friendly, a bit rushed, and they know a few details about the company, so the request seems legit. But it's an attacker, and this is how some of the biggest breaches of the last few years began.

They act like a stressed-out colleague and talk your IT person into resetting a password or MFA. Now they're in. Add one verification step before any reset, every time:

• Call the employee back on the number already in your records, not a number the caller gives you.
• Or have a manager confirm the request through a separate channel.
• Or use a pre-agreed code or question that only a real employee would know.

Make it a hard rule for whoever runs your IT: no password or MFA reset on a phone call alone. Verifying takes 30 seconds and stops the attack.

You get an email with an attachment that looks like a photo. You click it to take a look, but instead of showing an image, it asks you to log into your account.

If that happens, close it immediately.

There is a new trick going around that hides inside picture files to slip past the security filters most businesses rely on. It uses a file type called SVG. It looks like an image, but it can actually carry hidden code. When you open it, your browser runs that code and sends you to a fake login page built to steal your credentials.

The security software lets it through because, to the system, it looks like nothing more than a picture.
A photo should never ask for your password. If you open an attachment and it redirects you to a login screen, that is your sign to walk away. Be especially cautious with any image you were not expecting, particularly those ending in .svg. People almost never send those on purpose.

If you are a client of ours at CisCom, check in with us to make sure we have this restricted for you. If you are a business owner elsewhere, ask your IT provider to block SVG attachments entirely. Almost no business needs to receive them, so blocking them costs you nothing and closes a dangerous gap.
Keep your guard up. It is the best way to make sure the work you are doing stays protected.
