Ever wonder how the Tone Biscuits are baked? 🍪🎸

They say nobody wants to see how the sausage is made.

But Tone Biscuits? That’s another story.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain at one of the less glamorous, but very important stages of building a Mercury Magnetics transformer.

Fresh from the varnish process, they’re hung up to drip, dry and cure before moving on to final assembly, testing and eventually being served up hot and fresh for your amp.

It’s messy. It’s sticky. It’s old-school.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The boys in the shop call ’em Tone Biscuits.

They must be pretty tasty, because our friend and legendary amp designer Paul Rivera keeps coming back for more.

Paul has been chasing, shaping, and redefining great guitar tone since the late ’60s, from his early custom amp work for top session players, through the celebrated Rivera era at Fender, and ultimately to building some seriously formidable amps under his own name.

We’re proud that when Rivera Amplification needs iron, Mercury Magnetics is part of the recipe.

Ziggy Says This Marshall Needs Some New Iron. 🐶⚡

Our longtime friend and client Casey Gooby sent us these great shots from his bench, along with a photo of Ziggy, who apparently oversees transformer selection and quality control at the shop.

More recently, Casey was looking for a replacement power transformer for this Marshall 2061X, and we’ve got just the thing: our ToneClone® P20JM, Mercury’s premium replacement for the original Drake T2650 used in the classic Marshall 20-watt Lead & Bass amps and the 2061X handwired reissue.

Casey is a talented tube amp tech, a longtime Mercury client, and, more importantly, just a genuinely kind guy we’ve had the pleasure of working with for years.

One of the best parts of what we do is hearing back from customers who take the time to share their experience.

Our friend Bertrand in France recently installed a Mercury Magnetics power transformer in his Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier and sent us an incredibly thoughtful review, along with these outstanding installation photos.

His original transformer had failed, but after installing the Mercury replacement he immediately noticed the difference.

⚡ No more overheating.
⚡ Rock solid voltages.
⚡ Greater note definition and clarity.
⚡ Sharper palm mutes.
⚡ More precise response to every control adjustment.

One line from his review really stood out:

"With the Mercury transformer, the amplifier sounds more Mesa Boogie than it did with the original transformer."

He went on to describe the sound as having a "masculine neutrality," focused, powerful, disciplined, and incredibly revealing of both the guitar and the player's technique. We have never heard an amplifier described quite that way, but we knew exactly what he meant.

⚡ Customer Spotlight: Justin Norris

Nothing makes us happier than seeing Mercury Magnetics components installed, tested, and put to work by a customer who truly knows his gear.

Justin recently upgraded two Marshall Studio Series heads, an SV20H and an ST20H.

His SV20H features a PARK 75 Output Transformer and a Mercury Magnetics 7H Choke for its pair of EL34 output tubes. He also installed recently received Mercury components in his ST20H, configured for a pair of 5881 output tubes.

After completing the work, Justin told us:

“The amp upgrade works perfectly as expected. The bigger Output Transformer definitely improved the sound quality from the amp.”

Justin also reported that the 7H Choke was the right fit for these amps, replacing the stock 150 ohm resistor while minimizing voltage drop to the power tubes.

He documented the work with detailed photos showing the stock configuration, completed wiring, upgraded components, and finished builds.

Excellent work, Justin. Thank you for trusting Mercury Magnetics and for sharing such a thorough look at your projects.

What an honor! 🇦🇺⚡

A huge THANK YOU to Barry Marie of Barwatt Amps in Victoria, Australia, for sending these fantastic photos.

Barry just became the first Mercury Magnetics customer from another continent to send us photos wearing a Mercury tee! That may sound like a small thing, but to us it means the world.

Seeing our transformers, and now our shirts, making their way into workshops and studios around the globe is incredibly rewarding. From Southern California to Victoria, Australia, it's a reminder that great tone has a way of bringing people together.

Barry builds some beautiful amplifiers, and we're proud to have him as part of the Mercury family. Thank you for your friendship, your support, and for proudly flying the Mercury flag Down Under.
