The Liebherr R 9300 G8 mining excavator is Liebherr Mining’s latest entry in the 250-tonne class, developed to replace the earlier R 9250 and introduce the company’s Generation 8 technology platform.
Introduced to the industry at the 2022 Bauma exhibition, the machine represents a step forward in efficiency and lifecycle performance for large hydraulic excavators used in open pit mining. Serial production began in 2024 after field validation confirmed its operational capabilities in real mining conditions.
The excavator has an operating weight of roughly 252 to 253 tonnes depending on configuration and is powered by a 1,007 kW engine delivering about 1,350 horsepower. Bucket capacities reach 16.5 cubic metres in backhoe configuration and 16 cubic metres in face shovel form, allowing the machine to efficiently load 100, 130 and 180 tonne haul trucks.
A redesigned attachment with new boom and stick geometry increases structural strength while reducing weight. This helps improve digging performance and overall productivity during loading cycles. In testing at Indonesia’s Tabang mine, the excavator achieved average cycle times of around 26 seconds and instantaneous productivity exceeding 3,000 tonnes per hour.
Efficiency was a central design target. The R 9300 consumes about 15 percent less fuel than its predecessor and improves fuel efficiency by roughly 25 percent through the Liebherr Power Efficiency system, which coordinates engine output and hydraulic demand.
The machine is also engineered for durability with a design life of about 60,000 operating hours, roughly one third longer than the previous generation.
With its new technology platform, improved efficiency and extended service life, the R 9300 represents Liebherr’s next step in the evolution of mid-size mining excavators.
