Most homeowners put off wired cameras because they picture torn-open walls. In a finished Los Angeles house that is rarely what happens: one Cat6 cable per camera carries both power and video, and it usually drops from the attic straight into a camera under the eave, so there is no hole through the exterior wall at all.

Where a wall mount can't be avoided, the stucco pe*******on is what decides whether the job still seals in ten years. We wrote up how the route changes by house type (raised foundation, slab, two-story, hillside, condo), which cable jacket goes where, and the fire-blocking the code expects. Se habla español.

Almost every security camera sold today ships with its microphone switched on. For a California childcare center that is a liability, not a feature: under Penal Code § 632(d), a recording of a confidential conversation made without everyone's consent is inadmissible, so the clip you kept to defend yourself can be the one thing you are not allowed to use. Disable audio at commissioning and have the installer confirm it in writing on every channel.

Our guide covers what Title 22 licensing does (and does not) expect from cameras, the three places a camera never goes, and three ways to handle parent viewing:

An outdoor Wi-Fi camera is the only device in the building you deliberately mount on the far side of the thickest wall in the structure, facing away from the router. NIST's measurements put 8 inches of reinforced concrete at 31 dB of loss at 2.4 GHz and 55 dB at 5 GHz, and traditional LA stucco is applied over metal lath, which behaves more like a screen than a window. That is why a camera shows full signal while you stand next to it and drops out from inside the house. Wire the views whose failure would matter; go wireless where a cable is genuinely impossible. A Savant system is decided at rough-in, not in a showroom. Two things that keep going wrong before drywall in Los Angeles: California's 2025 Energy Code requires JA8 (LED) light sources, and Savant's wireless dimmers support incandescent only when wired without a neutral — so the no-neutral shortcut is closed in a 2026 house. And every Savant Power Module takes panel spaces in addition to the breaker it manages; a house with 40 breaker spaces under full-home control can need about 84.

The full rough-in list — back-box depth, 2.4 GHz keypads, panel arithmetic, and who may legally do which half: https://innov8av.com/savant-smart-home-prewire-los-angeles

Most Los Angeles offices still open their doors with a 125 kHz prox card — a format standardised in 1996 that a $30 handheld duplicator can copy in seconds. The less obvious point: the credential is the reversible decision, and the reader wiring is the one that ends up inside the walls. Over Wiegand, an implant fitted behind the reader in about a minute defeats even an encrypted smart card, so specify OSDP with Secure Channel before the cable is pulled.

Does a security camera need a monthly fee? Not by itself — the subscription belongs to the cloud platform, not the camera. The arithmetic most buyers skip: a $20/month plan is $1,200 over five years, and continuous 24/7 recording is often a separate per-camera add-on on top. A camera recording to an NVR you own carries no mandatory monthly fee, and 30, 60 or 90 days of continuous retention is a drive-size decision you make once.

Warehouse scanners that work at the dock and die three aisles in are usually a physics problem, not a router problem. Stocked racks attenuate the signal at roughly 3 dB per meter of dry goods and 10 dB per meter of liquids (HPE Aruba's design figures), and Zebra's TC5x/TC7x/MC33 handhelds roam at a fixed −65 dBm that cannot be changed on the device — so if the next access point is not already that strong, the picker walks through a hole. Near LAX and the ports there is a fourth cause: a radar hit on a 5 GHz DFS channel drops every client for about a minute. For a 100,000 sq ft building the planning envelope is 13–33 access points, and only a survey done with the racks full says where in that range you land: https://innov8av.com/warehouse-wifi-installation-los-angeles

Registering your security cameras with the Sheriff or Beverly Hills PD does not give anyone live access. Level 1 is a pin on an investigators' map — free, about a minute, and you can delete it. Level 2 puts a FususCORE device on your recorder (Beverly Hills' published range: roughly $350–$7,300 by camera count, plus a subscription) and streams the cameras you choose under a policy you set: continuous, emergency-only, or never. LAPD still has no public registry as of September 2026, and no registry fixes a camera that cannot capture a face, a readable plate and a correct clock. A California HOA can legally put license plate cameras on its private roads. But the moment those cameras turn plates into searchable text, the association becomes an "ALPR operator" under Civil Code § 1798.90.5 and owes a written, publicly posted usage and privacy policy — skip it and the exposure is $2,500 in liquidated damages per violation plus attorney's fees, and after Bartholomew v. Parking Concepts (2026) a plaintiff no longer has to show the data was misused. On the hardware side, most plate systems fail on physics rather than law: a plate needs roughly 100–150 pixels across its width and a camera angle under 30°, which a general-purpose dome at the gate does not deliver. A Savant app that goes offline after a router or internet change is rarely an app problem. Savant's own documentation says dealer adjustments are needed after an ISP, router or Wi-Fi-credential change, and there is a second trap most owners never hear about: the Savant host is usually an Apple Mac, and SavantOS 11.2 lists macOS Tahoe as not supported for Mac hosts, so accepting the macOS 26 upgrade your laptop took can take the whole house down. This guide walks through the Settings → About triage, the what-changed-and-when questions, and the three devices Savant says an owner may re-provision themselves (with its call-your-dealer caveat kept attached).
