One thing that is important to me right now is trying to reduce food waste; this comes from both a frugality perspective and from an environmental perspective. My layperson’s understanding is that when food decomposes in a landfill, as opposed to composting, a lot of methane is created, not to mention we miss out on returning those nutrients to our local soil. After three years in LA I’ve finally figured out how to compost here (yay! - I was spoiled by SF’s single stream municipal composting), but meal planning has also been huge in reducing the amount of food that ends up in the waste stream. To that end, I am pleased to introduce the Ladybones weekly dinner planner! Letterpressed cover, digital interior, printed on 100% recycled paper from French paper, which — bonus! — uses hydroelectric power to run their paper mill. 💚💚💚good luck with your Mondays, my loves.

it’s ok to do things after putting them off for years. in November I decided to “release some burdens” and deal with various unfinished projects - both mine and inherited - cluttering the studio. These are my hands folding poems by Basho with illustrations by Arthur Okamura, printed by Clifford Burke in the 70s. I’ve been dragging them around with me, loose and unfolded, since I bought my first press in 2013. I plan to sew them next week.

Dear Friends,

Ladybones has a little secret to tell. This past week, we made a huge move; we picked up half the shop and took it to Los Angeles.

November 13 will be Ladybones' three year business-versary. In that time we had to move our shop in and out of three different studios; it also became painfully obvious that home ownership was not something that was within reach for myself and my romantic partner in the Bay Area; meanwhile, our closest friends moved away one by one. And so, over the past couple of years, we have been making moves toward a more affordable city, which have now finally came to fruition. We are now proud owners and residents of 18741 Cohasset Street, Los Angeles, California, 91335. We will live in the house with our cat, and the Ladybones print shop will be inside what was once the garage.

One of the hardest parts about leaving the Bay Area and the business that I've built there is leaving behind Ladybones' star employee, Katherine. She is the half of the shop that is remaining behind in Berkeley (along with our sample books and some small finishing equipment). She will remain on payroll and will be available in the Bay Area for meetings, sample approvals, fulfillment, etc. She's an amazing shop manager and I hope she will be a part of the Ladybones team for a long, long time. In part because of Katherine, I will also be making regular trips to the Bay Area.

From the client perspective, little will change. We'll still be the super responsive, low-stress shop that we have always been, we continue to provide all the services we always have. Hard copy proofs will still come standard, and outlandish requests will continue to be welcomed with wide open arms. For current clients, shipping to the Bay will be free for the time being, and pickups at the former Ladybones HQ can definitely be arranged.

We are looking forward to building a new community here in the Southlands, but we will keenly miss the community we have had in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland.

Can't wait to work with you on the next project.

In a deluge of news, I feel I should let you all know that (a) Ladybones has moved successfully to Berkeley (b) custom business is booming! and (c) Ladybones has applied for a Kiva Zip loan. https://zip.kiva.org/loans/16663

Kiva Zip is a zero-interest, crowdfunded business micro-loan with a 36-month repayment term. I had been looking to get a loan through my credit union, but they don't really loan sums less than $25,000 (!!) so they directed me to Kiva. I'm applying for $6500, which will allow me to complete the restoration of two vintage presses, to upgrade other equipment, and to bring on an employee one day per week.

There are two weeks left in the fundraising period and we've already reached almost 75% of the total! Also, any loan of $100 or less is matched by Capitol One (weird, I know, but I'll take it).

That means... if 9 people pitch in $100, or 12 people pitch in $75, we'll be home free!

I honestly had no idea if this would come to fruition, but I've been blown away by the response from strangers over the past couple of weeks. So if you have a little extra scratch lying around, Ladybones would appreciate your investment!
