When ransomware hits or a storage array fails, leadership asks two questions right away: How much data did we lose, and how long until we’re back up? Those questions map to two key recovery metrics, and understanding RPO vs RTO is essential to answering them: Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Re

Social engineering used to rely on a convincing email and a sense of urgency. It now comes with a voice you recognize and a face you trust, generated in seconds by AI. As agentic AI reshapes how attacks are executed behind the scenes, generative AI is doing the same to the oldest attack vector in t

Organizations are wiring AI agents into email, ticketing systems, databases, and financial platforms so they can complete multi-step tasks without a human clicking every button. Agentic AI Security Risks: What Enterprises Need to Know

Agentic AI is no longer a pilot project confined to an innovation lab. They are retrieving data, calling internal tools, and completing multi-step tasks with far less human oversight than the software they replace. Gartner projects that 40 percent of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5 percent just two years earlier.

That pace of Agentic AI adoption is outpacing the governance structures most organizations have in place, and security teams are noticing. A recent Dark Reading poll found that 48 percent of cybersecurity professionals now rank agentic AI as the top attack vector heading into 2026, ahead of deepfakes and concerns about passwordless adoption.

Why Agentic AI Creates a New Attack Surface
Traditional software follows deterministic logic. An AI agent does not. It reasons, plans, and acts based on goals and context, often chaining multiple tool calls to complete a task without human review of each step.

That Agentic AI autonomy is exactly what makes them useful and exactly what makes them hard to secure. Every agent needs credentials, every credential needs to be scoped, and every action an agent takes needs to be logged and auditable afterward.

Legacy identity and access frameworks were built for human users and static service accounts, not for non-human identities that can spin up, escalate privileges, and interact with dozens of systems during a single task.

The Risks Security Teams Are Watching
Several risk patterns are recurring in 2026 incident reports and research.

Over-privileged agents. Agents are frequently granted broad, standing access so they can complete a wide range of tasks without repeated approval requests. That convenience becomes a liability the moment an agent is compromised or manipulated.

Prompt injection and manipulation. Because agents act on instructions embedded in the content they process, attackers can hide malicious commands in documents, emails, or web pages an agent is asked to read, redirecting the agent’s next action.

Credential sprawl across multi-agent systems. In orchestration setups, a single controlling agent may hold API keys for several downstream agents. Compromise the orchestrator and an attacker inherits access to everything beneath it.

Memory and context poisoning. Agents that retain conversation history across sessions can accumulate sensitive data over time, and that persistent memory is itself a target attackers can attempt to corrupt or exfiltrate.

Shadow AI. Teams are deploying agents faster than security can review them. A 2026 industry report estimated the average enterprise had roughly 1,200 unofficial AI applications and found that shadow AI breaches cost an average of $670,000 more than standard incidents.

Where to Start
Securing Agentic AI does not require a completely new security program, but it does require extending existing ones to cover non-human identities. A few practical starting points:

Treat every agent as an identity. Give each agent scoped, least-privilege access rather than broad standing permissions, and issue short-lived credentials where possible.

Log and audit every action. Full observability into what an agent did, and why, is the difference between catching a problem in minutes and discovering it months later.

Cap memory lifecycles. Set hard limits on how much context an agent retains so it cannot become an unmanaged repository of sensitive data.

Bring shadow AI into the light. Inventory the agents already running in your environment before writing policy for the ones you have not deployed yet.

Agentic AI is delivering real efficiency gains, but efficiency without governance is how new attack surfaces get built. Organizations that treat agent identity, permissions, and logging as first-class security concerns now will be in a far better position than those that wait for an incident to force the issue.

Concerned about the AI agents already operating inside your organization? Topgallant Partners can help you assess your exposure and build a governance framework that keeps pace with adoption.

Russian Hacktivists Target US Infrastructure

There is a persistent assumption in cybersecurity circles that hacktivists are noisy but largely harmless — ideologically motivated actors whose bark outpaces their bite. Recent federal indictments out of the Central District of California should put that assumption to rest. They tell a different

How AI is Making Cyberattacks Faster and Harder to Stop

INTRODUCTION Artificial intelligence is reshaping nearly every industry and cybersecurity is no exception. But while much of the public conversation focuses on AI as a defensive tool, the threat it poses on the offensive side is equally significant and far less discussed. We recently posed a questi

Remote administration requires reliability. A recent configuration issue demonstrated how a small hardware detail can prevent Wake-on-LAN from working on a Mac. The requirement was straightforward. A MacBook Air needed to be accessible remotely via a VPN 24/7. The system should be able to sleep to s

Explore why AI cybersecurity governance must be addressed now, as data leakage and policy gaps create real, operational security risks not future threats.

Recent industry discussion and practitioner feedback point to a clear conclusion: the most pressing AI-related cybersecurity risks today are not theoretical attack scenarios, but operational gaps—specifically data leakage through AI tools and the absence of governance and policy frameworks. That
